Well I bought my GS about 4 months ago and after riding it the 120 miles back from Kent I stripped her down for a cosmetic rebuild, which she needed badly.

Some 2 months later and looking much sparklier I began riding it only to find a nest of electrical probs. The bike had an off at some point in it's life and I thought I'd replaced all the visible signs of this. What I missed was the tiny pilot bulb for the main beam which had shorted out and burnt all the way through the loom once I'd operated main beam a few times.

So I ordered a second hand loom and spent another 2 weeks of evenings after work taking the old one out and putting this "new" one in.

It was all in and fitted today and ready for the first fire up.
Turn, turn, turn....nothing, no firing. So I check electrics related to the Motronic. It turned out that the main black connector block from the motronic had a tiny orange wire severed, easy I thought...but there was hardly anything left of it to form a connection. So I stripped back the heavy duty rubber sheathing which is near the wide connector plug.

This was almost brain surgery, but I managed to get a tiny bit more orange wire out which allowed me to pinch a bullet connector on and make a diy connection. Sweat pouring at this point, I slowly reassembled, tank on and fired up again.

Got her to fire this time but only ran with manual revving and died at tickover. Because of how rough she sounded, I'm guessing she is only running on one cylinder now.

Tank off, check all wiring again, and checked other obvious ones like the throttle cables snagging...back together again and started.
Still firing on one cylinder.

I'm f***kin knackered now and completely fed up with the site of this bike which has taken over 80 hours of time from me and my young family and is not a goer. In despair I have pulled the garage door down and don't want to see it again.

Thought I'd come on here and give the keyboard a bashing as I need a good cry!

Here is the loom I bought second hand advertised as from a 1997 GS the same as mine.

The only things I am left wondering about this blasted bike now are:

Would the ECU need resetting after all this electrical work?
If it was from another/older model (not as advertised) would it present these problems?

:spitfire:mad::thedummy:blast:nenau

I've just put a new(second hand) loom on my 1100,and had the same problem,it was cranking over, but wouldn't fire.I checked and re checked everything, and eventually came to the conclusion that it was a lack of fuel pressure. The pump would whirr when the ignition was switched on,and I thought that was good enough, but it's not.I took the pump out of the tank and put the gauze filter into a jar full of petrol, and connected it back up to the bike, and switched it on.The pump whirred and it just blew petrol out of the overload(?) valve on the top.No one seemed to know if it was meant to do this or not(because you can't see it when it's in the tank)

A new(second hand one) was bought and fitted, and all the problems were gone.

Stick with it,and give me a bell if you want to compare notes 07905 802663 or the workshop 01829 771040.

I know it's bloomin' obvious, but you have checked the seating of the throttle cables, not just on the RH side in the classic place, but all the others as well?

Cheers Vern,

but why would the gauze filter be a problem after a loom change?
It was running fine 3 weeks ago before the loom business?

Cheers Tobermory,
have checked those already.

I felt so sorry for your complete frustration with the situation, and can sympathise.
I was also going to add don't despair as there will be some throughly good chap along shortly who will be able to offer some kindly advice......but as usual someone saw "the batsign" and beat me to it.
Keep smiling brucewayne things can only get better, and probably will.
Your in the best place for help and advice :thumb

Well I'm getting a spark from both plugs tho the RHS one was very brown and oily (that would be from the inner oil seal I only replaced a short time ago).
Cleaned it put them back and investigated the tank and fuel pump instead.
Fuel pump "seems" to be operating ok but still...

firing on one???:blast

Why dont all the GSers in Norfick arrange to visit the lad next weekend if he promises you bacon rolls and cups of tea.
You can stand around stroking yer chins and offering-up suggestions.

Im sure you will have him fixed in no time at all.

It would be akin to getting the Amish folk to build yer barn in a day.

When did you last change the fuel filter?

Won't be the fuels filter unless it's done all it's mileage using petrol from a bucket at the side of the road in some god forsaken hole.

Do the injector thingy, there's a measurment somewhere to tell you if they're working properly,I'll se if I can find it for you

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but i think the ECU will reset the moment the battery is disconnected.???
I feel for you mate... I hope it turns out to be something cheap and easy to fix!
