R1100GS - I just don't know what to do next!!!

Dont worry its not mine :D:D
Its a merc from work. It had a small electric fire and was off the road for ages. I took it back up to Peterboro (in the rain) leant down to pick up my rucksack and found it floating  Not sure of the details after that but it was off the road a while :eek
Ive hijacked someone elses thread :o Sorry.
Anyhoo stick with it Batman :clap:clap
Take up Verns kind offer and go though it with him just incase youve missed something...

Get the basics, if one cylinder is running, then make sure the other is getting fuel/spark/air :thumb

Exactly. :thumb2

Then tell us which cylinder isn't running, which header-pipe remains cold?

If it's the right-hand one and you have fuel + spark to it, go back and check the cable seating. Not just at the TB, have a very, very close look at the end that disappears into the splitter box.

I spent days trying to sort out my bike when it was running only on the left cylinder.

The throttle cable on the right was seated properly on the TB but it was pulled out of the splitter box, even though it looked okay.

Bit overwhelmed by the support, thanks all :thumb

Will check the injectors and downpipes etc asap.

deep breath

Probably completely unrelated, but I just read this:

http://tinyurl.com/4shapl

turned out to be a badly seated throttle cable (but not the throttle body end - the inboard end).

Edit :: Just realised - this is exactly what Mike P refers to above...

Thanks Matt,

I am soooooo gonna check that one tonight.
Aswell as doing a Motronic reset as I've had the CCP's on and off with the loom install.

:thumb2

When you do check it, don't just do it visually. Mine looked as though it was seated correctly, it was only when I used some long-nosed pliers and tried moving it that the outer shot inside the hole and snapped into place.

I'm with Mike P on this one, that's where I'd look first now (having left my bike for 2 weeks wondering what to do cause it was running like a sack of poo.

Has all the symptoms of running on one as you describe, sounds rough, won't idle revs really slowly and misfires. Cable only needs to be 4-5 mm out and it just sounds horrendous.

You're gonna kick yourself if this is the problem as it's such a small stupid thing, but it's something we've all done so go get a brew and I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya :thumb

err... you've not mentioned (or maybe i missed it) when were the valve clearnances last checked... i'm no expert but a non firing cylinder could be down to lack of compression (or something) due to the one of the valves being way out of kilter...

I can never remember which valve this would be... but surely ensuring they're correct will help narrow down the possibilities.

To be honest Tony I don't know as the bike has no history and I've owned it just 4 mths.
It's something on my list of things to do, but the bike was running sweet (well as sweet as boxers go!) just 3 weeks back, before the dreaded loom change.

It's not red and you didn't buy it from a short bloke in Portsmouth did you? :augie

To all those that helped me in my hour of darkness yesterday I have some entertainment for you!!!!

Having reset the Motronic this evening and double checked ALL the throttle cable ins and out which were all fine I started her up, still firing on one.
Checked the outlet pipes, RHS hot, LHS cold! ooh!

Looked at the bike long and hard, made a roll up and thought about the loom fit and how I'd had to decide on which connector plug went to the airbox and which one went to the LHS injector. Could I have got these the wrong way round?

Coming out of the loom they have very similar lengths and because one had snagged I thought it was shorter and therefore would only fit to the airbox.
Unsnagged it reached to the injector ALSO!

Swapped them around and BINGO!!!!

So there you go, I hear the laughter....including my own.
Running sweet and all ready for work tomorrow.

THANKS GUYS

I guess this means you now know what to do next.

Ride the bloody thing.

(and get it serviced too)

You can also console yourself that
a) you have learnt something
b) shared it
c) added it to the collective wisdom
