R1100GS Vs R1150GS

Hi all

I am thinking of changing my R1100s for a GS just had a ride on a 1150GS -great no pain! ( the 1200 is right out on cost grounds!)

What are the pros/cons between an 1100 & 1150?

Any advice gratefully recived

Headlights are crap on the 1150.
Also, not much extra power to speak of.
The 1100 has a nicer beak, in my opinion (thats cos I have one of the best ones .. i.e. a black 'un)

Come on, let's get real! The 1100 is a great bike. I loved mine for 4 years and 60,000 miles. And I've recently refreshed my memory by renting one. The 1150 is SUBSTANTIALLY better in some very important respects.

- the gear change: the 1150's feels like a modern bike, the 1100's feels like a tractor

- the extra gear ratio - high speeds on motorways on the 1100 are much harder work, tons of vibes, not nice at all.

- the smoother, gruntier motor thanks to the much better valve gear 'n stuff that first appeared on the R1100S

- reliability. Early 1100s were dreadful - mine was always on the back of an RAC truck - but the 1150 has been remarkably bug free.

- the exhaust note - the 1100 sounds like a broken strimmer. The 1150 sounds like a motorbike

The 1150 was a backward step in only one respect - the bars are stupidly wide. A real pain in London traffic. I had mine cut down.

Oh. and plastic tanks on early 1100s feel lovely, look lovely and have an amazing useable capacity.

Mine is still smooth and relatively 'vibe-free' at 160kph. Much faster will cost you your license. Besides, I didn't get a GS to go fast. However, I find myself riding faster becauses of the low rpms at speed.

- the exhaust note - the 1100 sounds like a broken strimmer. The 1150 sounds like a motorbike I don't even know what a strimmer is, even less what a broken one would sound like. A boxer sounds like a boxer. If I'd bought a bike for its sound, I might've ended up with a Ducati.

Nope.....although I may consider an Adventure but not a standard 1150 thanks . I bought mine new as the last 1100 just as the 1150 hit the showrooms and I haven't regretted that decision once even having ridden the 11150 a number of times.

OK I've got a 1994 GS with 70000KM on the clock (plastic tank) I will exchange with cash my way. But only for a 2003 or later ADV and I'd feel like I was really doing you a favour...

Oh and it'd have to be custom respary Kalahari otherwise forget it...

As you've seen, everyone here loves their bike, whatever flavour it is......I'd suggest you go to a dealer (even if you intend to buy privately) and try both an 1150 and an 1100.......not at the same time if you're not big and butch but take both types out for a GOOD ride....ten minutes round the block won't do.......

Then poke around on them, count your pennies and go for the one that your heart says it wants.......whichever type, you won't regret it.
