- the gear change: the 1150's feels like a modern bike, the 1100's feels like a tractor My 98 R1100GS has excellent gears, no trouble shifting gear, no 'clunk', no mistakes.
- the extra gear ratio - high speeds on motorways on the 1100 are much harder work, tons of vibes, not nice at all. How fast do you want to go? Mine is still smooth and relatively 'vibe-free' at 160kph. Much faster will cost you your license. Besides, I didn't get a GS to go fast. However, I find myself riding faster becauses of the low rpms at speed.
- the smoother, gruntier motor thanks to the much better valve gear 'n stuff that first appeared on the R1100S Rode both, but the 1100 seems to have more torque at low speeds and better gears for off-road use.
- reliability. Early 1100s were dreadful - mine was always on the back of an RAC truck - but the 1150 has been remarkably bug free. You should've bought a 97/98/99 1100, when all the bugs were gone. And the early 1150s were not bug-free.
- the exhaust note - the 1100 sounds like a broken strimmer. The 1150 sounds like a motorbike I don't even know what a strimmer is, even less what a broken one would sound like. A boxer sounds like a boxer. If I'd bought a bike for its sound, I might've ended up with a Ducati.
