i have a 1998 r1100gs and the rear wheel bearing is shot is it a job for the home mechanic or a dealer only job ie special tools etc all advice very welcome thanks

Hi,i did not replace the shim.Normally, the bearings are pretty close to each other in terms of machining tolerance and the shims are there to compensate for differences in the rear hub casting.
Thats my theory and i'm going to stick with it until the new bearing fails early.
If you have access to the shimming tools and the procedure,it would be advisable to at least check out the clearances.

Not as close as you think.....take a general catalog and have a look (main brg manufacturer have it on-line.

But I do not know the influence on service life of the bearings since I do not know the exact design of the final drive.

That's the comments from an SKF engineer
