Hi Folks

I'm new to the GS range of bikes. and I knpw this is a FAQ however here goes

my local dealer has a '99 1100GS (ABS) for 5300. full service history and 25K on the clock standard with no mod's

I thinking of buy this but need to know some basic info

what do I need to look out for on this bike.

any help would be appreciated.

Must be a black one at that price - they're much more sought after.

I paid a dealer 4.5k for my 97 1100 about a year ago with 27k on the clock so the price seems about right for a dealer.

I'd want ABS and heated grips and possibly panniers to seal the deal.

If you don't mind the colour there's a yellow one in the FS section.

Did I mention that the black ones are best (with the expensive red seat option).
 
Welcome to the madhouse Roddy. Narrow down "Scotchland" for us.
I would think that at that price (tad expensive) it would have to be in absolutely immaculate condition. There will be others about with that kind of mileage and FSH but a bit cheaper.
My '97, 1100 (75th Anniversary edition) was slightly more than that over a year ago, but came with full luggage, ABS, FSH, and only 12k miles. About the same time as I got mine, there was one down in Englandshire (Crewe?) that was going for about the price that you are being quoted.
At that price (5300) you could probably start looking at getting a good used 1150, as probably the other guys on here will be able to tell you. I would not be able to endorse the 1150, however, 'cos everyone knows the 1100's were the pinnacle of the GS range of craftsmanship from Bavaria.;)
Last word: be patient and keep looking...
 
PP- I did a search and got a lot of very useful tips/info, basically not a lot goes wrong with the 1100, so I'm still tempted. cheers

Rev Chuck- I'm in Glasgow, I have spent the afternoon trawlling the web for prices and the like and the bike seems to be the going price with a few more expensive ones kicking about I should have mentioned that its got engine bars BMW ones as far as I can tell, a top box and heated grips they are also throwing in a years BMW approved used bike warrenty and tax/MOT. and it's the black one with red seats, Also what I have read so far the opinion on the site from previous posts seems to be go for a good 1100 model instead of the 1150 one

Mine's just gone over 90k (only 40k of mine), so it's a baby compared to Vern's. Never missed a beat.

Bruce from this forum is selling his GS at a very good price, however it's done 46K miles, now I know this isn't a lot in term of boxer engines however there will be wear and tear issues.

what can these be ?

bearing/ shaft bearings discs shocks ?

whats the price for a 50K service ?

any help thanks.

Not much of you do it yourself. Not that hard if you give yourself plenty of time and have reasonable space and access to a few good tools. Haven't looked to see what the 50k (shouldn't it be 48:confused: ) service consits of but none of it is that complicated.

It really has to come down to what you feel more comfortable buying. If you like the thought of a bike with less miles and are happy paying top dollar for it then go for it. If you want one that, judging from teh picture, has been very well looked after and is probably in as good condition and saves you £1500 as well then there's your answer.

If it was me I'd have no hesitation in buying Bruce's bike, you're cutting out the middle man.

FWIW I paid £4k for my '99 1100 a year ago. It was a trade in at a non BMW dealer who just wanted to out it, hence the low price. It had done 32,000 miles then, was immaculate, and I intend to keep it for a bloody long time. These bikes (hte 1100's obviously) are seriously built to last, the later ones (98/99) had all known problems sorted and if properly serviced will realistically go on for 150k miles before major component failure.

The 11 is the best...

Mines done 60K and so far I've changed the master cylinder the hall sensor and the petrol filter....

Maybe a clutch one of these days but its been fine since I adjusted it....
 
I've just given mine it's 162000mile service and it cost about £30 in fluids and an hour or two in the garage:beerjug:
 
so are these bikes easy to service, since Bruce's bike is due a 48K service I was hoping to do it my self.

so service manuals hows the best and are any available on CD ?

parts for service is thew local dealer the best place or somewhere else ?

I just had a horrible thought then,does 162000 divide by 6000:confused: I hope I just haven't serviced it out of schedule,do you tink this will affect the warranty:cool:
