I have a R1100S but was thinking of changing to a GS, has anyone done this? & what did you think? :)

Dickie,
I have done it, and still have the S, that I will sell now the better weather is here.
I bought an 02 ADV last Oct.
I find that at nearly 50 and with a slightly iffy back, the ADV is a much better bike for me. Also better for the wife.
We plan to do more longer distances and found the tank on the S was very restrictive (I did fit a 22ltr conversion by the way) especially if you are travelling with other ADV riders with a range of over 250 miles.
I found that my stile change slightly, from a slightly agressive semi sports bike style to a more relaxed progresive style.

Are you a member of the Boxertrix site?

Mike.

I too have changed, now on my second GS,I had the high bars and screen option on my S.So it wasnt too much of a change in position(for my 6 foot 15.5 stone bulk!)
The biggest difference I noticed was how much smoother and more refined the 1150 seemed compared to the S.
No doubt the 1200 boys will be along to tell you how much smoother the 12 is :D.
Go for a good test ride , you won't be sorry.
Dave

I did this although so far I've still got the S as well. Pillion (when I had one!) much preferred the GS although still appreciated a blast on the S which is harder suspension and more focused. Still haven't decided which to take to Switzerland this summer as my mate has an 888 Duke which is v evenly matched to the S (with van der linde pipes and chip) I suspect 1200GS would be nearer.

I've had a sit on the R1200GS & I like the look of the bike, I just need to wait a few years for a used one to become cheap enough :)
I've only had my R1100S a year & mrs 2679 would not be very pleased if I spent any more on a bike. :(

I had 2 R1100SS Boxer Cups, one after the other, jboth great bikes, just got my 12GS, it is quicker on any journey than the 1100, more fun, more comfortable, and more my size (6'2 17st)

The fuel guage makes a difference as does almost twice the tank range.

I dont think you'll be dissapointed!

Don't get me started on tank range, 105~120 until the light comes on, what do you get from a 1150/1200 GS?

I wouldn't know, seeing as my 12GS is back at the dealers after 106 miles with a leaking fuel tank!, but I reckon 200 plus is easily achievable. Tank range on both my Boxer Cups was 105 best 85 worst (to fuel light)

Dickie,
I was getting about 100 to 135 out of my S before I fitted the bigger tank, then I got more like 160.
I get over 250 from my ADV.

By the way, was that you at Matlock today, parked just up from the black S with the big tank bag?:P

I traded my 1100S for the 1200GS. I found the 1100S to be too uncomfortable for long rides and there was too much vibration. I also didn't like the gearbox and it seemed kinda slow. The whole rig required too much effort to ride fast. But I did love the non-ABS brakes. Best thing about that bike.
I can ride the 1200GS all day in comfort and it seems to be a good deal faster. What's more, the girlfriend doesn't complain when riding on the back.

Get 180 miles out of a standard GS1150 tank

I've still got my S though I plan to sell it now that the weather has picked up. I bought a 12GS though I still have a lot of time for the 1150, particularly the Adv and it was a very close run thing between that and the 12.

I'm 6'0" and found the S just too uncomfortable for the touring that I like to do. Perhaps I'm just a soft rider but I often get 145-155 miles before the light comes on with mine so its not the fuel range that was the problem, simply the riding position. It's a shame to sell it as it's a cracking bike and though the 12GS is smoother I still really like the 11's engine. Riding it is like putting a favourite old jumper on.

My advice is to get the GS (1150 or 12) and accept that there will be occasions when you will mis the S but on balance the better comfort wins through.
