R1150 gearbox oil

Can anyone advise me how to go about changing the gearbox oil on my
R1150RT, where is the drain and level plug and what do you use to get the new oil in, I suppose its the same as the GS'es, my thanks to anyone who can help me with this, and I know I'll have to get a manual of some sort, somehow though, manuals never explain it as good as you see things explained on this site.
 
Two plugs on the side of the gearbox (one on top of t'other, few inches gap between em), if ya can't see em don't do the job!!!

They are really obvious. Last bottle of EP90 I bought had a little tube out of the spout, that did the job for me.

While your at it, don't forget to do the bevel box, even easier and probably just as crucial.
 
Don`t forget to remove the cap from the bottle of oil and invert it before trying to get the oil to flow out.

And undo the filler plug before the drain plug.... could be embarrasing having drained the gearbox oil and not be able to get the fill plug undone ..... :mad: .. ooops!!!
 
Hmmm...should the bike be parked with the engine switched off before attempting to change the gearbox oil,or would it be quicker and more convenient to do it while filtering on the M25 ??

And don't forget that fully-synthetic oil makes the gear-change sssooo much sweeter. Well worth the money.

Yeah . . I know :D

However, if it really was a serious question the guy needs help and advice not just made to look stupid in public.

I'm sure we all post things that we regret, but we have been around the site long enough to take the resulting abuse. I wouldn't want to put someone off coming back with another question if they were stuck.

I must admit that when I first read it I thought "you cannot be serious" :eek:

This is an old topic, but out of curiosity - and help!
I am planning in changing the oil myself, these plugs look a bit odd to me. I am sorry if this is a daft question :blast, but how do you actually remove them :thedummy?

Gearbox oil

Put the container in some warm water before putting in the gear box, makes it run a lot easier specially in cold weather, guess your having a laugh about the plugs?, if not I think a visit to your dealer or Mr Steptoe and let them do the job.

I was honest about the plug :D, as it could have a trip or something like locktite requiring a hot gun, or a special seal. I guess not?

They're a hexagon socket head; they take an Allen key (can't remember the sizes,) or better still a hex key that fits a ratchet; with a six inch extention. They shouldn't be too tight, jusy hand tight then a quick nip seals mine OK.

I will certainly do so! I believe it is far easier to change the gearbox oil that the engine oil and filter (my bike has crash bars...) :thumb

Changing the engine oil and filter isn't difficult - but you will need the correct filter removal tool, its not the same as a car filter (as my neighbour found out after he had warmed up his '99 1150GS and drained the oil :blast).

Just as well I read the manual first and get the right tools before I start :augie

I changed the oil myself (including the filter) already 2000 miles ago. But before I go on my trip this spring to the Alpes, I will change the oil again. Oh, a strange thing happened to me, the oil filter got stuck in the tool! So I had to put the filter back and tight it back again... bizarre... but well, this is a general problem it is happening with all the allen keys as well - they all get stuck in the bolt!
I got the tool to remove the filter from motobins - btw, very helpful guys because I was unsure which tool to get and they gave a nice piece of advise.
