2003 R1150GS, last started about 2 months ago. Recently had the tank off to replace the fuel couplings. Whilst the tank was off I took the battery off to give it a charge, battery is an Exide battery and from the history of the bike it was replaced in August 2017, so I thought it should have plenty of life left. Now when I try to start the bike I hear the fuel pump prime with the ignition switched on and when I hit the starter button there is just a constant clicking sound, like a chattering relay. The headlights go dim due to he draw on the battery from the starter I assume? It seems like the battery is dead, or am I overlooking something else obvious? It was perfectly fine before I started taking the tank off, guessing it is hopefully just coincidence!

Anyone have any suggestions before I order a new battery?

Have you checked the earth straps? These can corrode leading to poor connections. Also check connections on starter solenoid and starter motor.

Your lights should not go dim, they should go out.

During the start cycle, the load relief relay is deenegised so all none essential electrics (note 1) goes off to provide full power to starter motor and the engine ignition system.

Note 1. Front lights, low and high if selected, horn, heated grips, indicators, instrument lights, fog lights. The only light left on is the tail light for safety.

A chattering starter relay is a sign of either low voltage, Or low current. As has been suggested check all your high amperage connections are clean and tight.

Flet battery or one on the way out would be my guess. How many miles has it done since new? How is it looked after when not being used?

Done less than 10k, but dont have it on a battery conditioner unfortunately.

Suspect I will have to bite the bullet and get a new one, just to eliminate the obvious!

before my batteries died, there was always a arning, the clock would revert to 0:00.

mine had the same symptoms last year, put new battery in and was no better

turned out the grease plate in the starter motor had come adrift and was sticking to the windings, shorting it out

you might have the same issue, easy to fix though after a bit of striping

Sounds like your starter has jammed. The 1150 drops the grease plate and magnets occasionally. Pull the starter and check it out.

Bought a new battery today and fitted it in, fired up straight away. Fingers crossed that's all it was!

The battery may well have been your problem but if it’s the planetary gear cover the failure usually comes and goes as the plate shifts position on the armature.
