Noticed a noise when starting a few weeks ago and also cranking over not as quick, yesterday she cranked over slowly, not enough to start, then just a click. I assumed to start with it was the battery so tried to jump start with a battery pack....just got the same click, so had a search on here which pointed to the starter motor, stripped it down as per the instructions on here, unfortunately the black plastic top disintegrated as I was taking it off, but when I got to the armature removal all of the magnets were loose and attached to the armature, so looks like this is the problem. I would try to re glue the magnets, but there is no point as the black plastic cover is broken (anyone got an old spare for parts knocking about to save me the cost of a new starter?) where is the cheapest place for a new starter? Cheers

If you're in the north of Blighty, try the ever-helpful guys at Meltham Bridge, in the people's Republic of West Yorkshire, now all voting for "strong and stable leadership." Sorry, was that a pink pig I just saw flying by ? ?

You can buy new plastic tops and brushes etc to replace your damaged one. I cant remember right now where I got mine but I think I bought it quite cheap, £10.00 or so. If the rest of the starter is ok, case and commutator I would either re-glue the magnets or get a replacement stator and rebuild it.
As mspenz says, at least you would have a spare.

PS; even the new plastic parts are very brittle and care should be taken when fitting the brush spring.

EDIT* just looked at my old invoices and the supplier was Wood Auto in Huddersfield, Tel 01484 439000. Cost for new plastic brush box in 2014 was £3.70 !

Euromotoelectrics in the USA have all the parts
quick delivery to Far North Australia, expect quicker to UK
pretty easy job and there are write ups here and on ADV as well

Thanks for all the info' guys, going to try and rebuild this one before I splash out for a new one. I have already glued in the magnets with heavy duty araldite, not sure if they have to be glued in any special way though?

Update, looked to buy the plastic top from woods in Huddersfield and it was £1.58 plus £7.50 postage, anyway on my travels I popped in and picked one up, the lady on the counter said if I would have phoned they would have just charged normal postage instead of the online standard £7.50. So all back together and the magnets glued back in and ......click....that's it! So don't know what's up with it, does look pretty shagged anyway.
So I have picked up another starter from a member on here, it is a much newer Valeo model which the guy tells me has a low mileage, but an intermediate problem, I have fitted it without stripping it down first and she fired straight up, but after a few starts seems to go a bit sluggish, some am thinking it may be that the plate inside is loose? This starter is the model that has the magnets clamped in so would not of thought its that.....will update later.

Yep, just as I thought! Plate was loose and had rubbed, luckily the one on the old starter was perfect, so I stripped the new starter and cleaned it, fitted the plate off the old starter, all back together and she starts on the button cranking over quickly.
