LW of HID50 fame fitted my new HID setup at the weekend and great it was/is too! The ride home later that day was great...

Noticed the adjuster is a bit dodgy, in that it is hard to turn without it slipping off and I'm not sure which way is up and down... i.e. what is normal "single" mode and what is fully loaded... As a slim lad I will have to twirl it a bit anyway...

If it is broken - what is it called and where do I get a new one?

There are several ways to adjust your lights. Behind/below the headlight assembly is the normal quick adjuster for 1 or two up riding. You should have a plastic hexhead piece with a black lever assembled around it. The normal adjustment is flipping the lever which makes quite a large change to the beam angle. This is all you would normally need to use. Fine adjustment is made by turning the hexhead part either by hand or with a socket. clockwise (looking forward) will pull the beam down and vice versa.

The only problem you may encounter is if the thread on the front end of the adjuster rod has rusted and seized in the nylon component that attaches to the lamp holder assembly. The entire adjuster assembly is part 14 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0441&mospid=51760&btnr=63_0580&hg=63&fg=12

I fixed mine and saved the cost of a new one by heating a metal nut of the correct thread for the adjuster and melting it into the damaged nylon component. Easy to do.

Both the above adjustments move both head and dip lamps together. You can also adjust the head beam independently using the screws located on the front plastic shroud around the head beam lamp. I raised the head beam a little in respect to the dip as it's like a searchlight with HID and worked better raised a bit.

Try ordering it from bm, they were the cheapest when I replaced mine.
