Hi,

Planning to change the brakefluid in brakes and clutch.
(I have hose and dot4 fluid).....

What is required to bleed the front caliper which has the bung (not bleed nipple) ?

What is under the hex-head bung on the clutch bleeding hose?

Do I need to buy some bleed nipples first?

Ta,

A ball bearing type valve.

You can thread a bleed nipple in there but you don't need to.....Timolgra and I got it down to a fine art bleeding my Adv maybe a dozen times on the fords run from Llangollen last year when my slave cylinder seal failed....

I used the tyre plugger spike to poke the ball in a little then Tim pumped the lever and minded the resevoir (Be very carefull there as the fluid will strip the paint off the tank and it's easy to spill some)

F/R/H caliper: graunch the whole bmw fitting out with vice grips.

i know that sounds like a bodge, but a spanner won't do it because there's only 2 flats on the fitting & there's no clearance for a spanner.

it's loctited in & is a bit stiff. replace with standard bleed nipple.

i did my clutch by removing the grubscrew & screwing a nipple into that. works, but makes a mess.
i'll probably do as the brake next time.

Anyone know why BWM use these odd-ball fittings?

i'd say speed, but as they are only fitted to one caliper they would only bleed 1/3 of the system

I'm under the impression that BMW fill their systems through these units, rather than bleed through them -

The opposite to what your doing ;)

That makes sense!

Is there an available special tool to hook onto these valves to hold them open for flushing? (No jokes about tyre reamers being special tools)....

A standard bleed nipple screws into them, and you can then use it normally to bleed. Then unscrew and put the grub screw back. Simple

Sorry if it's a stoopid question, but why not leave the new nipple in place? :nenau

Doesn't work like that - you bleed it when it's fully screwed in, and it seals when it's slightly undone - the opposite to bleed nipples.

So if you left it in place, you'd lose all the fluid, and if you undone it slightly to stop the fluid leaking out, you'd lose the bleed nipple.

So you bleed, and replace the grub screw.

Don't ask me, it's not my idea.

Or if, like me, you have munged the grub screw and can not actually remove it, you have to remove the whole ball valve widget and replace it with a standard bleed nipple.

No doubt someone will now tell me of a profoundly good reason why this is a bad idea.
