Anyone with one of these equipped bikes will know that the hinges can be broken if the lid flops too far - I usually stand in front, or have an arm ready to prevent the lid going beyond upright to prevent it. However, in The Faroes the wind was so strong that it ripped the lid off one pannier, even though I was stood partly in front. It smacked me in the chest and then flew 500 yards down the mountain!

Just a picture from my trip.

The incident in question.

I retrieved the lid and have been riding around with it held in place by a judicously placed bungie. :aidan

All fixed, albeit temporarily. :thumb2

Today I found a place that sells these hinges, they are the original item, but from an industrial supplier rather than from a BMW dealer. It means they are half the price. The only problem is you have to buy 10, or it is silly money again. I have placed an order for 10 hinges and they are ordering them in for me - should be here later this week, or early next week latest.

Now, I don't need 10 of them. But I am happy to have the two to put my lid back on and have a couple spare in stock, because it is bound to happen again. :augie If anyone else with these panniers wants a pair of hinges, or two pairs, I am happy to sell them at cost. Otherwise I shall just put them on ebay.

BMW dealer price: £25.20 plus postage, PER HINGE.

The ones I am getting in have cost me £15.00 each, including VAT and postage and everything.

If there are several of you, and you're quick, I could order 20 instead of 10 - probably be a bit cheaper. I will have to change the order later today though, otherwise it is 10 winging their way.

Done Johnny. I will let all folks know when they have landed and then get them packaged up and sent...and change the ones on my lid too, of course. :D

Bought mine for 1/3 the price of the BMW dealer. Same manufacturer. Exact same hinges.

This is old news and has been covered on here many times over the years (the issue and the sourcing of replacement hinges).
When I bought my GS back in 2003 the Adventure panniers had been subject to a factory modification and came already fitted with a SS wire stay which prevented the lids opening over 90degrees and over-straining the hinge, 10.5 years later they were still working perfectly when I sold the bike.

Funnily enough the Trax panniers that are fitted as standard to my Stelvio NTX use an almost identical hinge arrangement but Trax sell as an optional extra a similar stay which can be retro-fitted in about 2-minutes, needless to say I bought three sets (one for the topbox as well) to prevent similar breakages as had been suffered by GSA owners.

After I replaced the two broken hinges on my top box, the first thing i did was to add a wire to ensure it won't happen again. The side panniers already had the wire. It's a 2006 SE.

Had the hinges break when I was trying to get something off the top case while trying to keep the bike standing still in the mud.

Hinges have arrived - so those who want some can have them. Those that just want to dig a finger in someone's eye can keep quite. After 13 years, I have broken mine this once....so they aren't that bad.

Those who have expressed interested in UK ones will get them - Canadian ones will cost you as much again in postage and import duties (£8.95 for the privalidge of the Post Office stamping the paperwork on top) I have been through these pains in the past - if you live in the UK it is cheaper to buy in the UK in bulk.

Yeah - perish the thought that someone might point out that there is a better, cheaper solution that you could have found for yourself with a simple search - a real dig in your eye.

Twat.

Is that really the sort of response one would get form a civilised, polite person?

I have plenty of spare hinges. I made a mistake and have ordered 10 pairs, not 10 hinges. But then, as people have already pointed out, I am not the brightest firework in the box, but I do at least make a bit of a fizz and get people laughing.

4 pairs spoken for, plus two pairs for me, leaves 4 pairs available. I am parcelling the others up today to nip down to the Post Office with. They should arrive by Tuesday.

Thanks folks. :thumb2

Just found your offer of hinges. Are there any left for sale ? Looking for 2

Sorry for delay in response, I was down in Plymouth to see my idiot brother - he has bust his pelvis in 2 places (at 63, not good news!) Silly twit crashed his PUSHBIKE and got piled into by 6 other similar MAMILs. Goosed his £6000 racing bike too, which was far more interesting than his ooohs and aaaaggghhhs. :aidan

Yes, I have two pairs left.

What would be total price inc p&p for the 2 pairs
For TWO PAIRS, it is £60, all in. When you consider the BMW price is about that for ONE pair, you are quids in. That would be the last of them, I only have 2 pairs left.

These look to be the same, or as near as damn it, to the ones used on various caravans to secure the gas locker lid. They can be sourced from caravan accessory shops either singles or in pairs. Might be worth bearing in mind if anyone needs any in the future. I'll try and find them and post a pic.

Okay just checking. What is the detention angle on the hinge ?

I don't know - the same as standard. There are a couple of stop points, first one is not quite 90-degrees, I can't work the hinge past it in my fingers, 'cause I am not strong enough - and I can't close that one again now either! There are 3 springs working the ball bearing detentes, which is why it is quite strong without the leverage gained by having the lid.
