Difficult to engage FIRST gear / first gear not engaging from first attempt and staying on neutral on R1150gs 2001 ( 45K miles, no service history :whip ) especially when engine cold is bike’s part of character or it can be fixed? Gear engaging fine if throttle applied / clutch slipping or pushing bike back or forward.

Thanks,

Andrei.

Part of the bikes character. All 3 of my boxers can do this. To select first every time keep pressure on the gear lever and slowly let the clutch out. It will pop in with ease. hope that helps.

they all do that, if it doesn't go in straight away let the clutch a bit out, just so the shaft in the gearbox moves around, it's because the dogs in the gearbox are not aligned, sometimes they are, other times they are not, just the position they stop in, no need to worry!

Yep - they all do that. I was riding up to Blackfriars bridge the other day on my 1150GS and came up to some lights where a guy on a blue 1150GS was having the very same problem! We agreed it's a pain in the arse sometimes when we stopped and the next set of lights. Happens on my 1100S too (in fact it's probably worse on that).

Due to the transmission and clutch design transmission internals stop spinning very shortly after the clutch is engaged. If the gear is not lined up it will not go in. In addition to the above mentioned, my "procedure" from standstill in neutral is to engage the clutch immediately followed by the gear change (almost at the same time). This way the transmission is still spinning so it has to "find" and hole. Try it out. There is an article from Getrag regarding this issue, I am sure somebody has a link handy.

Wet clutches always have small amount of drag so they don't have this issue.

HERE you go... a thread just for you i posted a few years ago, with "why new bmw owners have trouble finding 1st gear" in the title :D

Pulling clutch and immediately engaging 1st gear works very well.

Holding pressure on gear lever for a moment after clutch released is very usefull technic as well together with applying some pressure on gear lever BEFORE pulling clutch lever - makes gear change almost as quick as japaneese bikes ;)

My bike makes some "ruttling nose" ( like bolts in a metal bucket ) for a short moment when i am starting my ride and engage 1st gear for the first time. It doesn't do it when i engage 1st gear from traffic lights. Just fist time after 1st gear engagement and STARTING MOVING when i START my ride. Sound comes from transmittion and fills like shaftdrive and gearbox gears were disengaged and now engaged :nenau

Character or else? :duno

The 1100 is much better with the cable actuated clutch. Give the adjuster a tiny tweek on the cable at the bars every so often and none of this rubbish!
