My 1995 R1100GS front shock is tired and rusty. I cant afford a fancy aftermarket upgrade at the moment but theres plenty of used R1150GS factory shocks for sale cheap.

Simple question - are the original R1150GS front shocks any better than the original R1100GS ones?

I have a YSS rear on the way.

Cheers.

It feels a bit pedantic to say this, but your question is a little unclear about whether you want someone to compare two used shock or two new ones, but the fact you are looking to replace an old 1100 shock would imply the first one. In that case, it's unlikely that a newer 1150 shock will be any worse than an old and well-used original 1100 shock, but it obviously depends on age/condition. If you are asking about comparing two brand new shocks then the answer could be different.

thanks paul - sorry if it wasn't clear. it was really a general question about how good the 2 factory shocks are and if one is better. that comparison would likely be most evident when new.

tufty you have a pm.

Iirc the front should fit, but I'm sure the rear bottom fitting is completely different

Have a look on OEM, but I'm guessing it can't do any harm to have a newer shock anyway i.e. 1150GS

cheers stu - aye ive got a decent rear on the way specific to the 1100. fronts are interchangeable - makes sense to get a younger front but sometimes corners are cut even with newer models and not always guaranteed to be an upgrade. can't hurt to try when they're so cheap though ;)

No worries... I just wanted to make sure I answered the right question :)

I'd think that you're quite unlikely to find a low mileage, good condition 1100 OEM shock So just go for the lowest mileage, best condition shock you can find within your budget.
