I'm currently putting new bearings in my final drive and I'm checking the shimming.

I have froze the pinion shaft and heated the black inner cover and used a dti to measure the shim gap as being 0.4mm.

My question is that the new bearing has around 0.2mm of side way play, so the measured shim gap could be taken as 0.6mm if the, do I measure the shim gap as being 0.4mm and add 0.05mm - 0.1mm of bearing preload to that figure?

It's my first time rebuilding one of these and hope the more knowledgeable amount you will be able to help.

Thanks in advance.
