Went to give the 1150 a decent clean before putting it to bed for the winter and noticed the bottom of the motor was covered in engine oil and the lower part of the sump guard had a pool of oil in it , pulled the sump guard and it was all down the bottom of the engine .

Cleaned it all off and degreased it and you could see the sump bolt was not leaking and nor was the oil filter or sight .

Remembered back to when I had my first 1150 and it did similar at about the same mileage (25,000) and sure enough it was the same thing all of the 6mm cap head bolts that hold the bottom cases together had loosened off and needed to be retorqued . Some took a full turn , they are the ones marked 1,2 and 3 on the diagram below .

It now seems okay but a bit odd how both bikes did it at a very similar mileage (mind you they were both built on the same day ) diag_9gw.jpg

See the same thing when I have casings powder coated, after so many heat cycles the coating under the bolt heads softens/hardens leading to the bolts relaxing slightly.
It’s more pronounced on refinished casings as the powder is no doubt thicker

Hopefully the retorque has fixed it for the next 25,000 miles ( if so it will see me out before it needs done again ) and if it keeps doing the same mileage per year that should be in about 2050 !!!!
