R1150GS suddenly lost drive coupled with squeeling noise... any ideas

On my way home last night I lost drive coupled with a loud squeeling noise. I coasted to a halt and with revving managed to creep along at 5mph for 3 miles to a safe place to stop. Does anybody have any idea what the fault might be. My GS has given loyal service for 84,000 and this is the 1st mechanical failure?

Input shaft on the gearbox??

Clutch?

I gues either way the the drive, gearbox and clutch will have to come apart and as the clutch has done 84K would be sensible to change.

I saw one of these on Friday last week (not mine) where the splines on the clutch plate had been stripped off and the splines of the gearbox input shaft were bent so there's a chance that's what happened to yours.
You'll need to split the bike in half and whip the gearbox out to check for that or a wasted clutch assembly, and if not it could be a broken shaft within the gearbox or the anywhere on the output side.

Hi, could be the shaft, it's bonded with a rubber damper. this can fail allowing the inner to rotate in the outer, try pulling the rubber boot by the final drive back an check for chewed up pieces of rubber in the swing arm. Easier fix than the clutch if you are lucky. Good luck.

Hard to believe it's the clutch splines.
When they go/wear you lose all drive, full stop. You wouldn't be able to creep along for a few more miles.
That would be the first bike i've ever known of being able to do that.

I've had the splines on the clutch plate go before at only 34k!
Imagine the splines on the drive shaft spinning round inside a hole with worn out splines, and that's exactly what it sounded like (A sort of screeching/clicking sound) that gets louder as engine speed increases.
Mine lost drive almost immediately, but it was under stress going uphill at the time.
Drive shaft splines were A-OK, and a replacement clutch plate fixed it completely.

I could do it on my 1150RT when mine went on the M25.

Gear box now out and splines on the input shaft and clutch are knackered. I now will have to find a 2nd hand box, or maybe someone out there who will refurbish for a reasonable price.
