R1150GS ... they still have "it", don't they?

Or so it is said...

I had two 1150's across a 10 year period and loved them both... Moved on, mistakenly, out of boredom and curiosity, to a 1200... ho hum..

But.... I always hankered after an 1100 when they first came out but couldn't afford one by some distance... This fell into my lap a few years ago and it still surprises me how good it is. Must have been amazing back in 93 /94...

Thats in lovely condition :beerjug:

That is fantastic. I still keep an eye open for a good condition low mileage 1100. They are quality items:okay

Now done all of 15K miles!!! so getting close to being run in... Trying my best to increase that but work keeps getting in the way...

Just swapped out the suspension for hyperpro and it now handles like a dream..

Looked into buying another 1150 last year when I got rid of my f800gsa, the bike I looked at was a 2004 with 23,000 miles and all the bits but the colour a flat grey with the black motor just didn't do it for me.

Still would have considered it (and then got it painted ) but dealer offered me a ridiculously low price for the 800 so bought a ktm 1090 adventure instead and got an extra £1800 part ex value.

Might still consider another 1150 if I sell the TDM

I really like it but before my rose tinted specs takeover completely, compared to the 1150 worth remembering that

The gearbox is more agricultural
The ABS setting quirks can be a pain the arse
The front master cylinder piston keeps on leaking

:)

But I love riding it and wouldn't be parted from it...

Great Memories

I've had an enjoyable hour going through some photos of my travels on this bike over the years. Some great memories and good people met along the way (sadly and inevitably, some no longer with us).

Western Eire, Dave FredCat, me, Andy Melton (Taffy Scouser) and the late, great Gerry Huxtable ...

Very much like me
I owned an early 1200 GSA for a while - but sold it as I prefer my 1150’s
Tried all manner of newer GS and on the ride home from the dealers, prefer the bike I had
Only bike that I have bought recently was a Tenere 700, not at the loss of selling the 1150’s though
I find it quite similar to a 1150 in a lot of ways - simple bike, no modes or electronic aids and a torquey engine

I would like a Yamaha XT1200Z Super Ten to supplement the 1150 & Himi, but whatever happens the 1150 stays:beerjug:

I would like to try a V85TT sometime

The Tenere 700 is like a mini 1150, being somewhat lighter and very different to the 800 GS that I have ridden
Like BMWs did with the 1150, Yamaha have nailed it with the Tenere 700

Seeing your photos retroman reminds me of my trips to the Dolomites on my previous 1150. Buying John Herman’s book and plotting routes through the Passes. And other trips through the Gorge du Tarn, Gorge du Verdun and Provence. It seems all of my best trips were on the 1150.

1150s are fine machines and my first trip to somewhere more exotic than Europe (or New Zealand) was when I rented one for a tour of South Africa's Garden Route. This proved that me and Mrs 3D could do the 'adventure' thing in some comfort, and although I think the 1150 is a marginally better bike, I never regretted buying my 1100 (I'm the second owner, it had only 18k on the clock) which we have ridden on 4 continents with no issues whatsoever. I suspect that the 11 will still be in fine fettle long after I can no longer handle the bike, it polishes up amazingly well and purrs along like it always has. 11XXs are great!

Gearbox on mine is better than my 1200 Hexhead was and from what I hear about the 1250 it’s better than they are as well. Always ‘snicks’ into 1st rather than ‘clonks’’ with neutral easy to select. No ABS so never had that problem.

I’ll just leave this here, 19years &8 months. :aidan

That's an absolute minter, Alan :drool

What's the mileage, just out of interest?

... and is that a Bryn Stubby I spy ...?? I ran with one of those for years until reinstating the OE pipe & cat. Still got the stubby, could do with a polish. I'll send it round :D

Mine

I’ve had two 1150’s (GS & GSA), 1200GSA and am currently on an 1100.. all have their quirks/abilities. The 1200 was made of hard cheese (2 driveshafts in 10K) but, I did 10k miles in 3 months on it, 32k in 2 years and loved it. The 1100 I enjoy but haven’t done anywhere as many miles as I’d usually do due to circumstances. The one I remember most fondly though, my first- a graphitan 2002 1150. The bike which, over the course of a year of owning an R1 as well, got used for commuting, my first tour and consistently looked over the R1 for fun rides too…the bike that set my love affair with the boxer engine and its character. I remember one review describing a cold ride through a village in Scotland one foggy morning, and with heated grips on, the engine doff-doffing gently, felt like an old friend guiding them. Fully agree with that sentiment.

Sadly, my 1150 just got a bit heavy for me as time marched on and I traded it for a F750 which is a bit lighter.

Still miss it though, we did many miles round the UK and Europe.
