Hi.

I presume that removing the rear seat and grab rail, and then fitting this (or similar):

https://shop.touratech.ie/ll-tool-compartment-cover-for-the-bmw-r-850-1100-1150-gs.html

and this (or similar):

https://shop.touratech.ie/luggage-rack-extension-aluminium-bmw-r-850-1100-1150-gs.html

would result in a long-ish & more-or-less flat platform for luggage?

What would be the approximate length from the back of the seat to the angle-crease toward the rear of the luggage rack extension?

Anyone got any pics of an 1100 or 1150 with this set-up?

21 inches, I just use the rack extention and the std plastic cover.

I also fit a plate with a pelicase that sits in the seat lug slots

Thanks PW.

Thought I'd read somewhere that the OE tool kit cover isn't particularly secure with the rear seat removed? Not an issue of course when there's luggage strapped on there, but what about when you take your luggage with you into the Ritz?

have you got the little plastic bit that you slide into the tool box lid?

If so that locks the lid down in the same way as you lock the seat down.

This was my preferred combination.
Wunderlich luggage plate (locked into place using the seat-lock) and a SS rack extension (manufactured by someone on this forum).

Many said that the Wunderlich plate would not do the job as it would fall off, not be suitable for heavy loads etc but after 10-years of continual use (I NEVER fitted the pillion seat) it always performed perfectly. The only time it was in danger of coming off was after a main dealer service when (3-times) they did not fit it into position and it was just sitting there ready to fall off. Luckily I was wise to this as the first time the bike had been in (for initial service) they had not fitted the pillion seat into position either!).
The rack extension was great for light loads (too far back for anything really heavy), I found it perfect for my tent.

I'm happy to leave it with the lock bracket provided in the tool kit.
It's not totally secure but that's a risk you take or not so to speak.

I tend to strap the sleeping bag to the rack extension as it's light yet fairly bulky
So uses the space better.

Mine was held in place by wing nuts on the grab handle bolts. It made a complete flat area the full width of the panniers. Sorry, it is a picture of the bike, rather than the set up - but hopefully you can see the result. I just used a sheet of 1.5mm stainless. Alloy would have been better, but it was what my brother had lying around!

Thanks guys.

I'm thinking of placing a drybag longitudinally (rather than the more common transverse placement) on the tool compartment cover and rack extension (hence also removing the grab rail - I understand this can also be done?). I'd be aiming to avoid the drybag interfering with access to the panniers (hopefully top-loaders like Zegas or similar).

I currently have nothing more than a deposit placed on a beaut of an 1150, but I expect it does have that little plastic piece to secure the OE tool compartment cover in place.

I'm a bit of a git for obsessive research and planning...

Any chance you know where I could get one of these? The plate that locks down in to the rear seat mechanism. Ive looked everywhere online including wunderlichs site and cant even find a picture of another one.

They probably don't make them any more. But you could give them a call. This is all the information you need including the part number, taken from their 2005 catalogue.

Thanks Ian. At that price I think I will give it a miss, even if I could get them to supply one! Locking cover from rugged roads looks favourite now at £50.

Curious to know the difference as I do not know at present anybody personally who has a GSA besides myself.
My 2002 1150GSA has a one-piece seat which attaches via a locking pin mechanism at the back and released by a key operated spring cable latch from the side of the bike (with the helmet lock).
How does it work on 2-piece seats?

If I wanted a single seat and attach a luggage plate as well, it seems not possible!

If funds are a bit tight, we do have a couple that are a bit scratched. If you're interested, I could probably give you a discount. Give me a call on 07828 691741 and I'll see what we can do. I'm away over the weekend, so next week would be best for me.

you can swop it out for the standard gs set up and then just have the front seat fitted on its own.

I have the wunderlich rear seat plate too with rugged roads extension plate but got a spare grab rail and angle ground the top off so luggage can be strapped on easily
