R1150GSA sat nav question

On my r1200gsa, when I had it, there was a connector under the dash to power up Sat nav's and the likes. Does the R1150gsa have the same connector?

If not where would the advice be to power up my sat nav. I've just purchased the migsel mount which allows the sat nav to be mounted above the clocks so I think it's going to be hard to hide the wires.

Any advice would be welcomed.

Hi Mark,

No it doesn't. Although mine was fitted when I got it, you can tap into most any power supply or from the battery so long as it's fused.

I'd have thought that with a bit of head scratching over a brew, it would be possible to run a power supply from the point you choose, around the head stock, behind the clocks and get it to exit through the plastic facia. Itf you've feeling adventurous and if you don't need it all the time, there may be the option to install a small socket for it.

Just plug it into the BMW accessory socket on the left side of the beak, with a suitable BMW DIN plug on the sat nav cable

No need for any fiddling, holes to be drilled etc

Job done

Depending on how you want to use it, you may find connecting it to the pilot light circuit worthwhile. It allows it to be switched on and off with the bike, but allows you to programm it when the internal battery is low without the ignition (and of course headlights etc) on. You can do this by switching to the parking light position.

Get a double right angled plug then, one for the sat nav and other one free

You've got another 12v socket by your left leg too, adapt :D

So why not hard-wire it to the back of the socket? Easy.

I have mine powered from a fused connection to the battery, but you can easily pick up a switched feed if you want - look in the font of wisdom for which fuse to tap. :thumb2
 
Use a supply that is IGNITION switched, not a permanent live.

Over a year or two, the little copper contacts will corrode away through there being a permanent current with even the slightest drop of water in the cradle...DAMHIK :blast

Interesting - mine's OK after a couple of years, but the contacts are gold-plated. I'm going to check now, though (dirty word scrabble will have to wait... :) )

I can never remember if it's cathodic erosion or anodic, but I've had three Quest cradles go dead with it over a decade....You'd have thought that I would have learnt by now :blast

I powered mine from the pilot light on my 1100 - room inside the headlamp shell for an inline fuse too (probably not the case with the 1150's lights though).
 
Interesting - mine's OK after a couple of years, but the contacts are gold-plated. I'm going to check now, though.

All is well, the Garmin 660 cradle is well sealed with gold-plated contacts. Inside is a circuit board and the screw-on back is sealed with a rubber strip. Reassembled with a trace of silicone grease to be sure, to be sure... I'll stick with my permanent live, so the Garmin doesn't switch off every time I stop for a few minutes. Ta for the heads-up though. :thumby:
 
As warmshead said, the pilot light is a good way to go. I did something very similar by tapping into the instrument lights. This has the added bonus that you need to switch your lights on to power it up.
I removed the screen and silver clock cover and spliced in. A separate earth was run to the beak chassis.

As I'm a tight git, I just use a normal car sat nav with a ram adaptor to fit to my 1150's migsel mount. This meant I needed to drop the 12v supply for the sat nav to 5 volts which I achieved by using/disassembling a garmin car charger and mounting the gubbins inside a cheap maplins electrical box. It all fits easily behind the silver clock cover with just a small piece of cable that comes out of the top to plug into the sat nav. As its behind the cover I have had no corrosion issues in 20k with this set up.

Side light?? it faces the front does it not?
Parking lights and your "side lights" always use to be called pilot lights. Try buying a headlamp and it always states "with or without Pilot light" and no thats not with acetylene lamps!

The sidelight supply is a good'un......a proper GPS (forget the toilet owner's version which come equipped with home cinemas, teas maids and wurlitzer organs attached :blast) will only draw about 1.5 amps max, and it's an easy place to tap into :)
