What did pay for your 12,000 mile service ? And where ?

I'm doing a little market research.

This should include:
Oil & filter
Air filter
Spark plugs
Valve clearance check
Bevel gear oil
Brake fluid
Diagnostics

Thanks.

This is probably of no use to you as it wasn’t a ‘regular’ service but I bought my GS1200 at just under 12k

It had had it’s 12k service, new rear tyre fitted and from what I can recall there was some work done on the final drive.

I’m glad I wasn’t paying for it as the bill was nearly £900.

That was Motorrad Dalkeith.

I had the valve clearance check and brake fluid done by my dealer (about 110 euros from memory) and got the service book stamped

Did the rest myself and reset the service counter with Motoscan app

Consumables cost about 100 euros in total

Including valve clearances, brake fluid, main dealer, 12k service, £360. Well known Motorrad main dealer in Preston

Mine was done under a split service

First half £280 inc rear pads

Second half will be £180 but that includes £60 for collection and delivery of the bike

South coast , one of the triumvirate

Thanks for the info guys. I was just checking how competitive I was against main dealers this year.

I charge £220 for the whole shebang using all genuine parts and fluids. But I also like to think I'm far more meticulous. When I did a 12K service in a main dealer I was given an 60-90 mins if I was lucky.

You can't take proper care and attention in that time. It's too rushed. I clean, re-grease and check lots of other things. I take about three hours in my own workshop.

It's also very common for dealers to use impact drivers for removing and fitting bash plates, engine bars and fairings etc. As it's a huge time saver. But It makes me cringe.

I would totally agree! I am convinced the dealer used an impact driver and crossed threaded a bolt to the engine bars which was not known until out of warranty 12k miles later. Caused lots of grief! (Previous GS) £220 is very good - wish you were nearer to me.

You can almost guarantee they did. Most dealer techs get paid SHIT but are on efficiency bonus schemes. You pay your dealer £100PH and the tech is probably on £10 PH. To pay the mortgage he has to strip threads :(

In my opinion a service by any independent has to be significantly cheaper than a dealer, but I would only use the dealer.
By saying things like it is common for dealers to use impact drivers, you are sounding like you are blowing your own trumpet and accusing all dealers of something that you cannot prove. I am sure that the local dealer will not slag you off for something that is not proven.

I could do that service in under an hour. And it would cost £180. Just don't check your threads. And all your fairing screws would be wound in pissed too :D

I am absolutely blowing my own trumpet. Because I know I'm better. Because from twenty years of working for dealers in all sorts of franchises, it's very rare that I've seen anything to be impressed about. Most care about nothing but margins, profit and box ticking. And I would estimate that 85% of the hundreds of techs I know or have met have an impact driver sat on the end of their bench.

But you're right. Not all use impact drivers. And not all are crap. But I didn't say they were. Did I ?

I'm not getting into a silly argument about impact drivers. Cheers.
