Hi, I've got a R1200 GS LC and bought it in January 2015. It's a fabulous bike and does everything I want it to do. However it is stalling intermittently when I go from 3rd to 2nd. Probably about 8 times in 1000 miles. Alan's Jeffries at Shipley couldn't find a fault so blamed it on "Newness"!
Has anyone else had this issue? It happened today just coming off the motorway onto a roundabout and I nearly dropped it! Quite scary

I had it early into ownership. Happened VERY rarely but was disconcerting (eg , braking for an intersection and then finding I don't have any engine).

happens when I am braking and going down the box with a closed throttle.

something to do the combination of a slowing engine + closed throttle.

the dealership did a throttle calibration (using the computer) and it basically resolved it.

the bike also enjoys better fuel.

Great its not just me then. I will get the dealer to try that. Thanks very much

I've had this once but I put it down to me putting lower grade fuel in. Same scenario, braking, closed throttle etc. I filled it with some apparently super duper fuel ever since and so far so good. It does get mentioned a fair bit on here though.

Me too. and still does occasionally 8000 miles in... Character forming at times and have got very quick at hitting the starter. Dropped it back to the dealer and they found that the exhaust valve electrics were misbehaving and the flap was not opening fully...Not sure if it anything to do with it, but new flap on its way from Germany. Does not seem to affect the performance. We shall see if it cures it.

There were a number of Hexhead owners (myself included) that had exactly the same symptoms - changing down from third to second. In my case it was only finally cured with a Hilltop remap so I believe its fueling related. Before the remap I also found it was a lot worse when I had the baffles out of the Akra can.

Stall or cut out?

Mine occasionally "cuts out" ie when I pull the clutch lever with the throttle closed, the engine dies as opposed to a "stall" which happens in gear when the load is too great for the engine e.g setting off from a junction in 6th gear!
I suffered one while test riding the GSA, reported it to BMW customer services as a safety issue, no one seemed interested. I was told that the official way to report issues is via the dealer network (told them too)
Here's an earlier thread on the subject http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php/356717-Intermittent-cut-out:mad:

Had the about 4 of these low speed cut-outs in the first 3,000 once i removed the CAT and tuned it they went away.

My guess is low grade fuel, lean factory setting and CAT pressure.

At 14,000 now and haven't had one since.

The dealer has finally found a fault. Apparently the oxygen sensors have failed. Here's hoping that's all it is......

Still cutting out. Both oxygen sensors changed too. Must be me!

Morning All,

Mine was the same, and has been said - was only 'fixed' by a visit to Hilltop.

Then week later wrote my GSA off. Permission to say "Cock!"

Regards

Mine did the same and a thread exists on 'Engine cutting out'. 2015 model. The bike cut out three times and I called my dealer to collect and return sorted! Apparently my throttle needed recalibrating (it was set at -5% and should have been 0% i.e. less than idle hence the stall). The bike was delivered back and after some 300 miles no more issues! I'm still very aware of this issue so ride accordingly!

Mine too

I have exactly the same problem and have had it for almost two years! The first stall was at the lights at the junction of Leeds Road and Baildon Road, bearly a couple of hundred yards from the dealership after picking the brand new bike up.
It's been back to the dealer several times and I've had various things suggested as the cause, but essentially they couldn't find anything wrong. It's had a few software upgrades but the issue has persisted and has seriously compromised my safety on a number of occasions!

I've written to BMW to point out that in my opinion this is a serious safety issue and needs to be urgently addressed. They advise that I need to have yet another software "patch" so that's booked for next week.

It seems to me that there is a significant number of bikes out there with this particular problem. i just wonder how many "offs" there have been already as a result of sudden, unexpected stalls and how many more there may be until this issue is solved.

Please keep us advised of any developments and I will update with the result of my "patch".

I'm that P'd off that I've been considering ditching the bike and buying anything but a BMW but after a ride tonight, don't think there's anything out there to match the GS WC if it can be relied upon!

Is this the heavier flywheel on the black engines overcoming the available torque on a downshift?

Are the silver engines faster but harder to clean?

Silver engines are easier to clean.

I have now been informed of another software update by the dealer that will aid gear shifting and the cutting out issue. Have they finally recognised it's an issue!!.

My wife's r1200r and my GS both had a software update this weekend. Shifting seems smoother using the quick shifter but neither of us have ever had cutting out issues so can't comment on that bit.

Hats off to Jefferies. I was there with the wife getting the 600 mile service done on her R and they told me mine needed the same update so squeezed me in at the same time.

I think it's a general update for all bikes. Mine had it done on it's 18 thou service last week and it's a 2013 bike with no quick shifter and hasn't had problems with cutting out.

Hope it solves the OP's problem though.
