R1200 GS Luggage question. Are the Vario Panniers wider than the Handle bars when retracted ? I do a lot of filtering so that would be a big bonus

I think so
The issue is not the width but you rarely filter "straight", as you wiggle in and out the rear of the bike would normally glide past a car as you cut across its nose, with panniers you need to be aware of the extra room needed for such manouvres.
In reality once used to them they are far less limiting than you imagine, however it is still bloody frustrating when you have to sit still for ages because you can't quite squeeze past and know you could have done without the panniers.
What I am saying is they will effect your filtering regardless of width, as do any panniers, but not perhaps as you envisage - which means you may find them better, or worse than expected.

Alu. Panniers are about an inch a side wider. So retracted varios are def not.
