Hi All,
My R1200st ( a foreign bike i know but this site seems to have the best technical postings) has got the dreaded rear hub carrier disc mount cracks(2 out of 5) i found a link on this site on how to remove same and after an hour or so got the old unit off. I have ordered a new drive flange and it seems that you now have to fit a steel shim in addition to new flange unit. the new part no's that i am awaiting are , Drive/disc flange part no : 3311.7722.831 and flange spacer part no: 3311.852.1832. Has anyone had experience of fitting these new parts? i assume the carrier will have to be heated in oven as per the previous unit? i cant find any technical info/service bulletins showing new type arrangements. anyone any info please ?
Thank you

No idea about the updated parts but I doubt the fitting is much different: hub in the freezer, carrier in the oven and you have about 30 seconds to line 'em up and drop the carrier in place before the contact between them begins to equalise the temperature and the fit gets tight. If there's a shim involved I guess that'll slide on easily before you put the rest together.

Thanks for that, i was wondering what order the parts went, the original type that i have has no spacer,i expect the spacer goes on first? i will wait till parts come, maybey the orientation and order will become obvious on examination? Once again. thank you

Have you spoken to BMW?

I had cracking around all of my bolts and BMW replaced it free of charge (they change the whole FD). Mine is a GS nearly 7 years old and well out of any warranty.

Worth a call.

Really? :nenau

The disc carrier on my 1200rt cracked in several bolt holes at 21000 miles & 4 years old and they didnt want to know not even a bit of goodwill on the parts, to get your whole final drive replaced plus the disc carrier is amazing, did you get to keep the old one ;)

Mine was done at BMW Battersea. It may only apply to the GS but what they told me is if they find any cracked carriers to replace them and send the old one back to Germany. No, they did not let me keep my perfectly working 68000 mile FD:(

All 5 of mine were cracked and one of the bolts was just spinning!

Just read your post again.....

Mine cracked around the wheel bolts not around the disc mountings, that may be the difference.

Hi All,
No i have not spoke to BMW after reading on the internet it seems that BMW are burying their heads in the sand and not helping the majority of people at all, it seems if your bike is in warranty its ok otherwise you are on your own. (like the FD fiasco) I have already removed the old flange and am awaiting the new and "Improved" parts (the third type i believe) The new flange HAS to be used in conjunction with a spacer/shim at around £39 in addition to new flange at around £135. My flange has cracked in two places on Disc bolt tapped holes. Oh well at least my labour is free.thank you all for responding to post,it is appreciated.

"My flange has cracked in two places"
That sounds very painful
As a rule, I like to keep my flange in one piece
I know - :topic

Let's hope the new Triumph 1200 gives BMW a good kicking. It might make them start being more customer focused (fat chance) I for one am holding back on renewing my 08 GS to see what it is like. Pal of mine said that stuff will fail on that as well and you won't know until it's been around a while...but of the three triumphs I have owned they have all been more reliable than the far more expensive GS.....I'll take the chance. :rob

Well Chaps,
Picked up the parts( £177.05p in total !!!!! ) and fitted them to my bike this morning, As i said in original posting there is a spacer that has to be used with the new type flange. the spacer fits onto the splined shaft with dirt exlusion seal towards the Fd output shaft seal, there is a small dowel on inside of spacer to locate it on splines correctly. I put the new drive flange in the oven for about 30 mins, After putting on some gloves i took the drive flange outside to bike and it slid straight on with ease, The new flange is made of steel so i assume the contraction rate is slower than the original alloy type.I Waited till the whole unit had cooled down, put a few drops of oil on circlip retaining groove and fitted the circlip which snapped into place . So hopefully "Job Done" the new unit appears to be a lot stronger than original type and a lot heavier, the one originally fitted weighed approx 575g the new one (without spacer) weighs approx 960g.Many thanks to all those who replied to my posting and to those who put the info online on how to remove old unit.
I have put a pic below to show new parts. Thanks !
