R1200 Top Box Lock/Barrel & Rack fitting

Hi folks,

Does anyone know what (if anything) I have to remove from my 2004/54 GS to fit the genuine Topbox Mounting Rack?

I need the 2 x special bolts that go above the rear light also?

Is drilling out my Topbox Lock the only way (without a key) that I can fit a new coded lock ?

Dunno if this helps I have 2012 model, and recently bought the top box off e-bay. I bought the rack plate and bolts from the dealer (£70.00 or so). At first I thought you had to dismantle the rack, but it literally bolts on top of the rack. You don't have to remove a thing - apart from the original two bolts at the back. Not sure about 2004 models - I doubt they have changed that much.

Forgot to mention, the person I bought the top box off had already removed the original barrel and included it. The dealer simply re-coded the original one to match my key. I guess without the original key you'd have to get the drill out. You might want to take it to a dealer - but when I queried this I think you would have to show proof of purchase.

If yours hasn't already had a rack fitted, you will have to cut-out two half-moon shapes in the plastic trim to allow the two support bolts to reach the mounting holes. Dremel and a steady hand is needed! I don't think the bolts are 'special' - from memory probably M6x20? I used stainless capheads IIRC.

If you haven't got the topbox key, either violence or a locksmith may be needed to remove the barrel I suspect. Do I vaguely recall that they are drillproof?

Is the top box locked? If not you can just unscrew it all and change the tumblers to match your ignition key - 5 min job tops.

Don't think so - picture 6 shows the correct key inserted into the barrel to enable it to come out.

Wrong key = no worky.

ive done it matey, your current key will remove the barrell

This photo shows the removed cylinder. Note how some of the tumblers protrude from the cylinder with the key inserted. Your goal is to rearrange the tumblers in such a manner that none protrude from the cylinder when the key is inserted:

Very easily done - I've done it a few times now.

As with most (all?) locks, tumblers/pins are coded to the key. If its locked, you will need to get BMW to open it with a master key. If it was otherwise we'd not need a key.

Reading down through the thread, this is indeed the case. Every time I've re-keyed, I've been fortunate enough to have the original key to hand, and being told by the dealer that they could do it without keys but it would be 'about an hours labour'

Got unlocking mechanism removed from bike (inc barrel) gonna now drill it out and get a new lock fitted for £20

I did think I needed to Drexel the plastic cover out , no probs.

Just thought I'd let you all know, got barrel removed from topbox, (no drilling required) then my mates I ply recoded my key to fit barrel. "simples"......
