Hi could anyone advise whether the ESA and asc is standard on the gs adv. there is a 2008 and 2010 models that I'm debating going for a ride out to look at later today but neither ads have much spec details. Both I think have abs and look like they have a large long button on left bar which I think is the ESA is that correct. Tried to work out what they come with standard but different searches say different things

Thanks

These are not standard. I think it's known as the dynamic pack.

ESA and ASC come together I believe and it's an optional extra when ordering new.

Enjoy your viewings.

Ps... The rear ESA shocks are know to leak and are expensive out of warranty to replace. Make sure you get a warranty if buying from a dealer and ensure the shocks are covered.

Thanks mate. Am I right in thinking thought that the long button is the ESA one?

No, the ESA button is small and round. If its a long and horizontal switch on top of the L/H cluster that will be the Aux lights ON/OFF button - standard on the '08 and onwards ADV.

Er...
The ESA button is the round one next to the high/low beam switch. Helpfully has ESA on it! Arf arf...
- Get your seller to show you it working. You can change damping on the move but you shouldn't change modes such as solo -> two up with weight on the bike.
Get them to show you it going to full extension which is when it has 'large mountain' (!) set. It'll take maybe 10 seconds to get there but you will see the front and rear shocks extending. Then back to solo and they will shorten.
I've changed a few bikes to Wilbers shocks - on my own GSA it's noticeably slower to change than with the original Showa shocks.
Early ones had Showa, later WP ones.

The long button? At the top - aux lights. That goes wrong, but easily sorted.

I haver ESA on my bike and like it but expect some bills when they need replacing. (£1300 for Wibers WESA)

Buyers seem to like the full kit so used values are lower with fewer goodies. But as said above the ESA shocks are costly to replace. Watch how it rises and falls when load/ride heights is changed. It will go up smoothly but should also come down smoothly.

Also check for -
Usual stone chip corrosion areas - engine front and rear frame rails.
Screen is straight. A simple falling over can bend the beak subframe.

thanks guys. as it happens neither of the bikes i was going to look at have the esa and asc so going to have a run out to southport superbikes instead. ive got a 1150 gs as the moment and would only really want to change it for a 1200 with the full pack on it.

Having already got a 1200 with ESA and ASC, I wouldn't have either on my next bike if I had a choice.

In the end one them does have asc and ESA and has the tyre pressure monitor as well. Is that the dynamic spec? The bike has 25000 miles and two owners And loads of toursyech bits. It's fairly clean apart from the normal bits that go. Price is 8000 at present. Is that about right?

Is that for the 2008 single cam or 2010 twin cam?

It's a dealer I've used for years and warranty is superb with them so will always do right by me. It's got full luggage as well. Offering my decent px as well.

If you're happy with the whole package then enjoy your new bike :thumby:

Yep, for not a lot more, the OP could get a twin cam:rob:thumb

That's the one thing that's slightly putting me off as I hadn't realised the change to twin cams until I started reading up. Is the difference In power that noticeable. What other benefits are there

In years to come the twin cam models will be worth a bit more as they are supposed to be the ultimate hexhead version. But, I would say the £8K isnt too bad for a full spec 2008 bike with FSH etc from a dealer.

Check out the adverts on MCN, Bike Trader and eBay then knock off the few hundred you would expect to bargain it down to.

The £8K should bargain down to at least £7750. Offer him £7500 and see what happens.

At £25K the rear shock will be on its last legs so expect a bill for that in a few K miles. Its probably rebuildable by a suspension specialist, but Wilbers replacements are much better equipment. Get a VERY close look at the piston rods back and front.

Thanks mate. Suspension felt pretty good to be fair, but can't say I noticed any different on any of the three ESA settings. Is that normal or a sign shocks are knackered.

How much would a suspension re build be roughly and how much are the weibers

I didn't realise that there was a twin cam version if I'm honest so am a little unsure now as to whether I'm better waiting another year to trade up and try and get a newer model or even a nearly new water cooled one.

Can anyone advise on the query. Thanks

I couldn't really tell much difference on mine with the OEM setup. As I've upgraded to Wilburs I can really tell the difference between each setting. If you can go back to the bike, with ignition on, but not with the engine running, cycle through the 3 options as you jump up and down on the seat. You should easily feel the difference in damping. If not then either the ESA motors are shot or the shock itself.
