I had a chance to test ride a new R1200GS Rallye with Sport suspension today which is basically a regular GS with the longer shocks and shorter TL-arm from the ADV.
WAs thinking about maybe trading my 2017 GS-ADV in to get a little lighter bike and maybe put 17 inch wheels on because I really don't need the bigger tank even if it is nice to have 100 miles or so range...
Looks aside I prefer the triple black to blue as also regular gauges to the I-phone screen I was surprised that the ADV was a little quicker steering at speeds above 70 mph !
I don't know if it was the tires as the Rallye came with Michelin Anakee 3 which suck compared to the Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2 or if there are still slight differences in geometry between the Rally with sports suspension and the GS-ADV ?
Needless to say I saved myself some money...;)
Both great and fun to ride bikes, though !
Compared to a regular GS the Rallye with sports suspension set on max is much quicker steering due to shorter trail. But the ADV was even quicker.
What I liked about the Rallye was that it came stock with a radiator guard...;) that does not fit on the ADV.
Also the 2018 transmission seemed to shift a little smoother than my 2017.
But there is really nothing better out there right now for road riding than any GS-LC...:thumby:

For fast road riding, the standard GS has the best geo. GSA and GS ‘Sport’ (read as offroad) quick steering at pace, on jacked up suspenders, just doesn’t give the favourable stability at speed. Offroad, at slower pace and with clearance demands, it makes sense. Less so on tarmac. Imho.

@spareparts;I think the opposite is true.
For fast road riding as in quicker steering and roughly 20mm added ground clearance for more lean the ADV and Rallye with sports suspension are better than the regular GS that has 5mm more trail and feels slower steering.
I was just surprised that the ADV felt even quicker steering and needed less bar pressure above 70 mph than the Rallye and wonder if there are still slight geometry differences beween the 2 or if it because of the Anakee 3 tires which are really not as good as the Pirellis when it comes to fast road riding.
Maybe someone can chime in who went from ADV to a Rallye...
