R1200GS Adventure: Final drive housing corrosion

In picture 2 (from Boxster) the disc brake carrier seems to be incredibly corroded (or filthy).

I hope he has been washing the road salt off on a regular basis. Not letting it accumulate for days or weeks, then washing it off to find blistering paint.

Thats just a bit of mud (not rust) on the disc carrier, I just wiped the hub clean to take the picture.. and yes i do wash the road salt off regulary.

A reminder to all posters that this is a technical forum.

If you have personal or other unrelated comments to make take em to the 'Pub' - cheers :beerjug:

New FD

For those that are interested in this thread I can report back that I got a new FD fitted at Bahnstormer under warranty. Very pleased with the customer service and free courtesy bike and coffee/cakes :)

phew Im so glad you told us it was an "adventurer" as Ive got a GS so the final drives are obviously different so I dont have to worry ?

Glad you got it sorted :thumb2

My 1100's FD has a similar amount of corrosion to that shown on your first picture - I wonder if BMW will do a "good will" replacement - it's only 14 years old :nenau

Cakes?!? Blimey, never seen those at Piddcocks... gonna have to change my dealership! :drool

Important

If you've had the entire final drive unit replaced, as I have, you are now effectively running it in.

I have been advised that the FD oil will need changing after 600 miles on the new unit ... so take heed!
