R1200gs Adventure - Which year

I asked him the same question. He said change the pipes but never change pipes and air filter and ideally use posh petrol. He said he's seen OEM maps with air fuel as low as 19 to 1 running very hot at the exhaust.

After that I found the Power Commander for not much cash to use as a stop gap until I could get the remap.

So a Full System swap is Ok as long as the Air Filter stays Stock?
Makes sense not to allow more Air into the Mix without introducing more Fuel.
I'm picking up a System this week so I'll talk to Jeff again just to be sure I've got it right before I start changing things around.
Won't be getting the Remap for a while yet.

The issue will be that the ECU with OEM map can't handle a free flow header, free flow can AND a free flow air inlet. It can handle two of the three. In other words, fit the whole lot before its remapped and you could arrive with engine damage due to running a too weak fuel air mixture. People say the OEM air filter is more than good enough so no need to change it. If that's true, why would it matter when a free flow filter is used or not used. Apart from noise, who knows what chopping and flaring the inlet tube could do to the airflow.

Just my opinion so check with Geoff.
It seems a compromise to tune the bike with an exhaust you don't plan to use long term. The ECU can adapt but there are always limits.

If the issue is engine protection on the ride up, use a big fat baffle to plug up the gas flow. Take a smaller free flowing baffle to use on the dyno.

As said, check with Geoff but these are the Qs I would be asking about.

I might regret this but here goes!!! I have Full exhaust (BOS headers and Remus can without baffle) and a K&N filter for about 10,000kms.........no problems yet.

Edit.

I do have the little accelerator module which richens the fueling a little (allegedly) which might be helping.

Any Performance improvement over Stock?

Any Performance improvement over Stock?

She seems to spool up quicker and there seems to be a good bit more shove over 5000rpm. I think the headers where the single biggest improvement, they make the bike feel a lot more responsive on the throttle.

I plan to fit a Full System Akrapovic shortly but can't afford the Remap for a while.
Need to research a definitive answer as to whether I can safely fit Pipe on its own.
If not then the whole thing will have to wait.

The stock ECU will handle the exhaust change ok. Stock up on earplugs though. I had a full sport system, stuck it for two days.
That's why you see so many for sale with little use. That, or they realise that an LC is the only way to get that performance.
You could just fit a set of de cat headers. Still get the same performance boost without the noise and expense.
Most aftermarket silencers actually reduce power, and the couple that give two or three bhp are extremely loud.
BMW produce a very effective silencer in terms of power and keeping it quiet. Still ugly, though.

I wear Plugs anyway these days as a matter of course.
I've had Beowolf, Arrow and Akrapovic in the past and found them reasonable as long as the Baffle stays it.
Definitely too loud without.
As long as the Motor won't suffer without a Remap for a Month or so I'm not too worried.
My 1150 has the Arrow and I quite like that extra bit of "Bark"

Basically the later the better. 2008-9 had significant updates over earlier models. 2010 twin cams had power, gearbox and ESA upgrades as well as an attempt to make the final drive last longer....with mixed results. Rear shocks will go at some stage....about 30k but can be fixed for about £150. If the FD does go, cost about £400 to mend.

Other than that, go on condition rather than mileage. I have seen pristine 70k bikes and shockers at 15k. A good 2009 with an AF XEID fuel map gizmo will be a great bike. Personally, IF you can find a non ESA one, go for that and use the saving over the ESA version to replace the shocks with Wilbers.....best riding and handling GSA I had.

I've just put a lovely 2011 adventure up for sale in the FSW section.......55k miles but very well kept £5750 including luggage, have a look....

My Akraprovic "Shotgun" system is a bit loud so I use ear plugs for faster speeds but around town its fine without. TBH all the other noises at higher speeds demand ear plugs so it's no loss that the pipe is a bit Barks a bit.
