R1200GS Fuel Pump Failure

What I find less than amusing is BWM's take on the problem.

Okay so water gets under the cover, which migrates through the seal into the electrics and causes the failures.

So what do they do? Improve the fu**ing seal!

Howabout stopping the water getting in there in the 1st place?

I have always had water in mine when I check, so how long before the seal allows some into the electrics?

Mine's affected. Went to the Dealer armed with Dutchman's letter - 'we are aware of the problem, but won't do anything until you have received a recall letter direct from BMW.'

Sort of, see my posts above, it is not what I would expect to see for an official BMW recall but a letter from the dealers asking me to arrange to have the fix done.

I have just checked mine and it is mecifully dry. I have re-assembled using Kent K44 (www.kent-automotive.com) silicon lubricant gel rather than silicon rubber which sets and makes future remove a pain. K-44 is a sealant as well as a lubricant. I have also used it on all the silicon seals on the electrical plugs around the pump as well as it allows the seals to reseat fully in "dry" joints without distorting and thus allowing moisture past.

There is the added benefit of the delicious way it allows silicon seal plugs to sliiiide fully home .... but let's not go there....

For Torx drivers, Laser Tools make an 8 tool penknife-style Torx driver set from 15 to 40. Slips straight into the tool roll (with or without silicon lubricant).

Also received a letter from Pidcocks, so rang to arrange for the work to be done got confirmation that it was the fuel pump water ingress issue. Takes half an hour for the work to be done.

I’m not too hot on the technical side of things so an apology if this is not related… Took mine in for it’s 12000 service last week and was told it was to be fitted with a new BMW recall – a modification to the fuel pump. Something (technical) to do with water ingress I believe.

My bike stopped on friday 3k walk phoned recovery and bike off to be fixed when i picked it up yesterday i was told wht had happened add was asked if it had got wet which might have caused the prablem implying that it was my fault luckily my wife was with me so i remained calm but could not believe the implication that it was my fault one wonders where all the "heavy duty" testing was done even a $5000 CB 250 seems to have better potection for its electrics
