R1200GS - key coding for panniers and topbox ?

Its a doddle of a diy job but not easy to describe. just look it up on you tube and there are videos to show you how to match key and barrell.

what you need is three barrells and some wards and your existing keys.

If you don't have the key, other than picking the lock, no.

Otherwise drill the lock out and buy a new one.

You can open the lock without the key, or you certainly could on earlier versions.

Find something slim enough to slide into the lock. You can sometimes use a thin bladed screwdriver. I did it once using an Acco clip, most usually used for holding sheets of paper in an office file.

Good chance there will be a YouTube clip on how to do it. Failing that any 1/4 competent locksmith or any kid in Livdrpool.

How do you remove the barrel from the case?

There are only a limited number of the circle thingies that need changing to fit your ignition key and I found that when I bought a top box off ebay, I could change them round to fit the key and didnt need any new ones. Irts a simple system

OK here are the pictures, which tell a thousand words on the subject.

First picture, shows the lock in place on a 1200GSA pannier . The small shiny tab is what needs to be depressed before the barrel can be removed.

Second picture, shows the barrel removed with the key in place. You can see the tab that needs to be depressed, it's the one furthest from the keyhole.

Third picture, shows the key removed. Careful when you do this or all the wafer tabs will fall out. As you can see, there are six wafers.

All of the wafers must line up as in the second photo before the lock will open.

Good Job! I have bought some boxes for my GS but the guy I bought them off left most of the locks, locked; which means that I cannot get at the tab to remove them. He is, thankfully now, sending his spare bike key over so that I can remove the barrels. So i guess the moral of the story is, if you are selling or buying boxes with code-able barrels, to unlock, remove and put in a bag before sending them.
