Just doing a final few checks on an R1200GS I'm picking up next Tuesday but looking at the pictures I noticed that the exhaust heat shield is missing.

The missing part I believe is stainless steel and is slotted. It serves no purpose other than to stop boots melting on the silencer inlet pipe and also looks better. Anything looks better than a weathered exhaust pipe anyway!

Should my bike have this part attached? It's one of the first R1200s as it was first registered in December 04 (54 plate) and the exhaust can has a black tip on it rather than a stainless one as on later models.

I think I can get one from motorworks which is near me and a second hand one will cost £18. That's if they have one in stock but can't find a new one on there.

Perhaps the previous owner has put an aftermarket end can on? My Bos has no heatshield for instance. This is only a problem with plastic boots by the way, leather ones don't melt on it. I tried exhaust wrap, but it looks fugly, and is starting to fray.

That's a possibility I suppose.

Nothing to worry about then, just buy a second hand one and bolt it on? Not sure if my boots are leather or plastic, they're TCX and they're waterproof that's all I know!

Not quite, if I remember correctly, the heatshield bolts to a captive nut which was welded to the original pipe.
Oxtars? Similar construction to Alpinestars, ie plastic heelguard? Don't ride with the balls of your feet on the pegs, 'cos then your heels touch the exhaust.

Do you mean the cheese grater type shield just above the header/silencer joint? holds on with 3 fasteners.
I'm sure I have one in my garage on one of my spare original silencers, PM me if you don't have any luck finding one.

That's the one mate.

I found one at motorworks and they're £18 each which doesn't sound too bad. Should the fasteners be already on the bike or would I have to buy these aswell? Where exactly should they be, or at least the holes for them?

Going to have a swing over to see the bike again in a bit so I can see exactly what's missing then I'll have a better idea.
