Did 100 miles last night on an R1200R, its a lot quicker than my GS. Both bikes have done less than 1300 miles, the R was so quick, couldnt believe it!

Is there a difference in power output or different gear ratios? It cant be just the weight can it?

Try an S1000RR and you'll have a new meaning for quick :D

The GS is 2012 and the R, 2011. Both only done about 800- 1100 miles. The guy behind me on a GT1300 said coming out of a corner he had to go down 2 gears to stay with me! They are not slow!

Can it only be 5kg between them? The R feels really light pushing it around.

Anyway, its a loan bike and Im very impressed with it. Didnt think I would be. Very underestimated.......

You sit much lower on the R1200R, it makes it feel much quicker when in actual fact it's just the same.

Also many folks feel much more confident on a lower bike and ride it much quicker.

R1200R
Primary transmission ratio 1.737
Gear ratios I 2.38; II 1.67; III 1.30; IV 1.07; V 0.94; VI 0.85
Final drive ratio 2.75:1

R1200GS

Primary Drive = 1.73:1

I, 2.38:1

II, 1.65:1

III, 1.30:1

IV, 1.07:1

V, 0.96:1

VI 0.84:1

Final Drive = 2.91

Apologise about the formatting.

I suspect the difference is down to the feel of a 17inch front and the gearing - the R1200R is much easier to push around - but then so is a Multistrada etc.

I had an R1200R as a loan bike for a week whilst some issues were sorted on my GS and I really liked it. My other half said it was really comfortable on the back, if I didn't have the GS I would be tempted, they're a fair bit cheaper too. The lack of wind protection may be a factor in making the R feel faster.

Couldn't live with the looks :barf

Couldnt tell the difference through the bends, but the R pulled out of the corner, much, much quicker.
It was pulling 50mph in first very easily, and from a steady 50mph, not in
1st..., in 4th or 5th she really got a move on.

Just need to find me a R1200R gearbox and final drive then.......

I don't know if it is still the case but the various 1150's had different inlet manifolds and maybe different cams as well to move the torque to were it was most likely to be needed, i.e. low revs on the GS and higher on the R and RT etc.

BMW quote slightly different figures for the two 1200 TC bikes including the maximum power for the GS being at slightly higher revs and having marginally more peak torque at the same revs as the R
