There is a about 3mm side-to-side play at the rim of the back wheel when tested on mainstand. The play is coming from looseness between the wheel flange hub and drive axle splines.

There is no play anywhere else (drive axle brgs, swinging arm pivots).

I have read on ADV-Rider that BMW say the whole drive should be changed as there will be wear on both male and female splines.

The Rep-Rom says the flange has to be heated to remove it and to re-fit it and clearly this is no longer the case for my one. Only the circlip is holding the whole shebang onto the axle.

Anyone have experience on this subject, regarding how much interference there is when new and how much play is allowable when worn?

Should I remove, clean, loctite the splines, slide on and let it set up?

If you have wear on the hardened steel splines of the final drive spindle it's game over mate and you'll need a final drive rebuild or new final drive. If your bike is in warranty no problem, if outside wrranty but full BMW service history you may get a goodwill repair from your dealer.

If it is only the alloy flange that is worn it can easily be replaced, I've just done mine due to cracking of the rear disk mounting lugs.

The alloy flange is an interference (shrink) fit onto the splined steel spindle so if your is loose DO NOT RIDE THE BIKE !!!

That circlip is now the only thing stopping the wheel and rear brake disk from falling off.:eek::eek::eek:


I'f dealer help isn't an option, I would suggest getting a blowlamp and some circlip pliers, then heating and removing the rear flange and closely inspecting the steel spindle splines to see if you can DIY repair. The new plange is £133.38 and new disk bolts are £4 a set. The circlip can be reused if undamaged by side-loading or wear from looseness.

EDIT: Forget Loctite if your splines are worn, it needs to be a shrink fit.

Don't be tempted by stuff off e bay either you need to swop your FD from a like for like bike!

Tucker bought an FD off a later bike but it's incompatible with his ABS

If you are interested in gettin a look at his I can P.M. you his Number he's in Carrickfergus Norn Iron and would probably not take too many shekels to part with the 2006 FD
 
Pukmeister, I think it sure was the material they used to made the old flanges on the 04's that's the culprit with the cracking and splines that's wear off.
A friend of mine 04 also had to had the flange changed on his bike due to the splines wearing thing. (if that is the correct way off explaining)

Got new flange Pt. No. 33117 699 631.
Removed wheel, removed caliper.
Removed circlip, luckily I had a good pliers or it would have been very very hard to do. It is in a deep groove and has a fat part opposite the lugs. The wheel sits over this and I think it would take a bomb to shift the flange off the shaft even if the splines were loose.
Cleaned splines and so on.
Next, I heated the flange with a blowlamp and bate it off using a rubber hammer on the back of the disc. Slack in working location but tight coming off. Undid the disc screws without too much pain.
Heated the new flange in the oven (about 100C) and bate it on using rubber hammer.
Used old flange to bate it back to the end so circlip groove was fully proud. Fitted circlip.
Fitted brake disc with small drop of loctite on the screws (wire brushed the goo off them but it was still there to some extent). There is a cut-out at 7-o'clock on the drive to allow you to get a torx bit in to tighten them.
Torqued disc screws to 30Nm, Caliper holding screws to 20Nm, wheel screws to 60Nm.
There is now no play at the wheel rim, before there was 3mm or so.
Time will tell how long that will remain the case.
I am very happy so far, the fit of the new flange would not want to be any tighter or you would need a press to fit it. So, I doubt if there is any wear on the shaft spline.

Sounds like you got a result there Bin, for a while I was expecting more damage and the need for a new final drive spindle or replacement FD. Glad it worked out okay.:thumb2

If I was doing it again, I would be ready with a good bit of studbar and some plates to use as a puller to yank the thing onto the splines. I am sure it would still need some wallops and the heat too.

Did you keep heating it as it came off? I had to keep playing the blowlamp flame over mine as I wound the gear pullers, otherwise it began to shrink and tighten back onto the splines. With continual heating it came off effortlessly.

I heated the new one to 120 degrees C in the oven and it slid straight on no problems all the way home, but I did clean up and WD40 the splines first then wipe dry so maybe that helped?
 
Had to heat it while removing and also while fitting. I did not want to lube the splines, wanted it on dry, but a drop of wd40 would have helped.
