Different people, different answers.

The official line is under 4,000 rpm until the first service at 600 miles, then gradually increase maximum revs thereafter. Don't let the engine labour.

Other people say that you should work the engine hard right from the off as it beds in better and rubs off the microscopic rough edges in a new engine.

I've tended to follow the official line and my bike has used no oil at all so far. I've ridden it "hard" within those parameters. Seems to work OK for me and my bike.

Other views?

Keep it spinning in the 'sweet spot' of the rev range and give it plenty of hard work once it's warmed up.

Asked the same question when I got my bike last year.

I probably used a combination of BMWbook guide and giving it a run up the rev range frequently without using full throttle.

The common theme is do not let the bike labour, I found the bike felt more comfortable nearer the 4,000 rpm.

Always keep an eye on the oil level as these engines in the main use oil.

Most importantly, enjoy the new bike!
