Probably be back Monday or Tuesday ish.......

Tax free for the forces ....mmmm
At the moment my VAT bill is huge - paid the German VAT and paid the UK VAT when I brought it into the UK because DVLA wouldn't start the registration process until I paid the UK VAT and the German authorities won't refund the German VAT until I get it registered in the UK! Maybe I should have just kept my German export plate on - would anyone have noticed?

I thought the whole idea behind this "Common Market" &/or EEC malarky was to make the movement of goods across EU borders as easy as an easy thing with a degree in easyness?

From the hassle that people have experienced it seems to have failed miserably. The only things the UK have gotten out of the EU have been Dutch Elm disease and 3/4 million eastern european immigrants. :rob

Oops This is turning into a rant - I'll get me coat.

Now I wouldn't mind of the hassle because the bike was cheaper and delivery much quicker from Germany but if different people in the DVLA, the VCA and VOSA didn't give different answers to different questions then it would all be much easier. Will take up the issue of different answers from different people once it's all sorted...... In the meantime the sun is shining and the GS is locked in the garage and I had to travel to Edinburgh in the car :(

From UK to France

I tried to register a bike from the UK in France. 15 years old with certificate of conformity etc;etc. It only took two years, a great deal of hassle and queing and cost around £200! However I have done the reverse for family & friends with cars from France to UK and no problem - but you must order UK spec. and (in theory) they are not allowed to charge extra for that. They charged about £500 for LHD but it still worked out 25 to 30% cheaper after all taxes were paid - but that was two or three years ago.
Can you not order to UK spec at German prices if you are in the Army there ?

Slight hijack - if you get the unit open can you post a photo of the gubbins - one of my dash light has gone but I can't find any info about them. In fact I can't actually work out how the clocks are removed to be able to get inside :nenau

is your bike still under warranty??? All the lights are LED's affixed to a circuit board...not replaceable except by someone much more talented than I with a soldering gun.

Cheers-
Aaron

I registered a second hand motorhome from Germany here about 2 years OK - the DVLA inspected that too. They never asked about the headlights and they looked at the km/h speedo and never said a word but with the GS they're making a fuss.......

I was quoted extra for UK spec. bike in Germany so took a standard German one - if it hadn't been selected for random inspection then no problems would have been encountered but thats life......

Warranty is OK - it's EC law that warranty must at least be valid throughout the EC if something is bought in the EC.

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Got a receipt from the German dealer where I bought the bike to say I had bought a UK speedo and headlamp and it's now registered!
They didn't want to see the bike again so it's all just been a huge paperwork exercise!

would ya still be interested in a swap hunda?
time now obviously isnt of the essence, but maybe in a month or so?

Or how about this as a trick -

Re-apply for DVLA certification and hope that they wont pick up on a duplicate application. I'd be willing to bet they wont spot it. And you would be highly unlikely to be randomly selected for the stringent test again...

If it's any use to you,I was going to put a second hand GS instrument console on my HP2,but the mechanic told me they are all dedicated to one bike,so you can't just buy a second hand one.At £500,I'm learning to live without a rev counter!!

Does it still work out cheaper than buying one over here, even when the work has been done?

Hi there, just a couple of cents worth for you. I was told the same. However while replacing headlamp bulbs I found if you pull off the block connector to the console my 1200gs still seems to run good so not too sure about that.

The bike will still start and run because the ignition, injection and immobiliser are part of the ZFE central vehicle electronics module and not the instrument module. If you test run like this with a GT-1 or GS911 (as I have) you will notice the odometer reading checked via the diagnostics defaults to some horrendous figure like 168,000 miles until you reconnect the instrument cluster, when it will then read the true distance covered.
