I am looking to get a tank bag for my R1200GS.....obviously I've seen the BMW kit. I want something like the low profile BMW one....but think £120 is a bit steep.

Any one know of any alternative products that they would recommend?
(I'm not keen on something that attaches to the fuel filler cap.....)

Thanking you kindly

Another option is a Baglux or similar tank cover and then a bagster bag which has quick release clips to the cover. As the bags are non BMW specific they can be picked up on ebay or here for reasonable money.

PS Shameless plug: I have a cover for an 06 1200GS going in the for sale section:thumb

I recently bought a Wunderlich Urban Tour bag from NN for a trip to France. I wanted something that was small enough not to interfere with controls/instruments etc but big enough to be useful and with a map pocket.

When I got it, one of the 2 zips was defective. I spoke to NN and he told me they are no longer made, to use it on the trip and then send back for a refund.

On the trip I found it so useful I am going to keep it and get the zip fixed locally. Cant understand why they discontinued it.:blast

You may find someone has one left in stock or a secondhand one on ebay if this bag appeals.

There is a demonstation video on You Tube.

I used one of these

Big enough to carry camera, drinks, change, and sandwiches, other bits and bobs. Small enough not to get in the way. Well made too.

Could anyone tell me if an expandable 2008 GS tank bag will fit a 2006 GS ?

Had both 2004 and 2008 GS and the tank shape of the 'Mk2' GS from 2008 onwards is different to the earlier ones. Whist I am sure it is possible to make 'it fit' in the sense that you can attach the tank bag to the tank it wont fit in the sense of following the precise contours of the tank.

Used to have one and it was a good bag - pitty you cannot buy one for 89.9 Euros - TT UK will charge you £102.44 plus postage:eek
For that money you may as well pop into your local BMW dealer and buy their version and probually negotiated a 10% discount whilst you are at it!!

Got a Famsa tankbag on my GS, not too intrusive when it not expanded but nice to have the option of the extra room if needed:beerjug:

BMW tank bag

I think the BMW one is excellent. Doesn't interfere with anything and you can get a lot in it. You don't have to fill it, though, obviously. But....it came with the bike (2004 GS) when I bought it, so I didn't need to consider cost. Mine is the one that hooks on at the front and has a zip attachment at the back. Don't know if they made other types. Very stable when it's on and quick to remove to fill up. What's not to like (especially if free)?

Only comment is the clear map pocket has gone very yellow, but it's not really an issue.

I know you are not keen on something attaching to the fuel cap, but after having my SW Motech powered bag for a couple of weeks now I have to say it's brilliant.

Fitting is a breeze, clipping on and off is a doddle, it's raised off the tank so no scuffs or paint wear and as it's powered I charge my phone inside the bag while riding as well.

Don't discount them, the SW Motech is the best tankbag I have ever used, and I have had Baglux etc in the past (not on a GS I have to admit)

Having clocked up thousands of touring miles, my take on it is:

(1) The standard BMW bag is an atrocious thing, with a next to useless map / route pocket, awkward to flop out of the way at fuel stops and 'over made'.

(2) The TT bags on the other hand are tip-top. A very good sized map / route pocket. Easy to use zips. Available in two sizes, I have both according to need. Useful elasticated cord on the outside of the bag, to hold your gloves while fiddling about at passport control or tolls. A well thought out (but very simple) removable credit card holder, great for sticking a card and payage ticket into. Useful pen / pencil holder. A good inner pocket in the 'top lid' of the bag, to keep maps and other papers separate. Easy to take on and off. Not 'over made'.

I converted both my TT bags with a Powerlet socket, which works very well, too. If you don't want power in the bag, don't bother.

PS Like tyres, underpants and helmets, every bod and their dog has their own favourites. My tip? Go and look at a few different bags or trawl through the posts on UKGSer. If you end up not liking a bag, 10-1 says you WILL sell it on UKGSer to someone who WILL be dead pleased with it. :beerjug:
