R1200GS watercooled - Post or Pre 2015

Hi peeps,

I'm new to this forum so my apologies if this has already been covered. I currently ride a 2009 GS and am hoping to update to a water cooled model. Does anyone have experience of the pre-2015 (i.e. lighter flywheel) and the post-2015 (i.e. heavier flywheel) models? Is the difference worth spending the extra money on? Just hoping someone can give me a clue :confused:

Hi Dave, Iv got a 15 WC and its been great, I waited for a couple of years of production for them to iron out the teething troubles, there were a few in the early day that had problems. I'm sure there will be peeps along shortly that's had the 13,14,15 and 16 that can tell you more.
They are great bikes, which ever one you choose enjoy. :thumb2

PS I had a girl friend years ago from Whasapp AKA Warsop.
 
Had a 13 GS and loved it, no problems with it at all, now on a lowered 15 GS(16000mls) and if anything, the engine is more "tractable" than the 13 model. Certainly not longing for the 13 because of the engine??.
 
I've got standard 2016 gs te ,, not had a gs previously but coming from honda vfr1200 have not found the engine lacking in the real world. Although I intended to buy lowered version , was persuaded by salesman to get standard one. I know i'm going to take big hit on the trade in but now probably going for the lowered version 28-29 inseam , is the suspension harder as I find the standard one quite plush .
 
I've got a 2014 model which has recently had a new 2016 engine fitted due to corrosion.

The 2014 light flywheel engine felt more responsive, but the 2016 engine feels a bit more refined and has a better gearbox.

There's not a massive difference IMHO :thumby:

Had the engine/ gearbox swap,prefer the later motor butnotmuch in it to be honest - go for what you can afford - go North-the bikes are miles cheaper at the man dealers
 
Hi Twisty, I had a '13 version GS and now have a '16 GS.
I kept the '13 for just the '13 touring season. It was a fabulous touring device while on the move but its Achilles heel was the clutch/gearbox situation where finding neutral in traffic jams and at traffic lights was very frustrating such that the clutch then had a tendency to drag unless I switched off the engine momentarily. My bike was never upgraded in the clutch/gearbox area while in my possession.
I moved back to Ducati (a Diavel) and Honda (a CB1100EX), both of which had neutrals accessible.
My current '16 GS is magical! The engine is a gem and I don't know what they have done to the clutch/gearbox but I can select neutral whenever I feel the need. If my '13GS was this good I'd still have it. To be fair the '13 GS varied somewhat from what I gather from other owners but the latest GS is the best so far in my experience not to mention the grin inducing quick shifter....
 
Though I've had no problems with my 2013, and I like the lighter flywheel, IIWY I'd buy the latest I could afford in order to get as much leftover warranty coverage as I could.
 
all used bikes from a bm dealer now come with 2 years warrenty
 
Mate, I have not long moved from a 2009 GSA to a 15 GSA, although I do like the 15 I would severely recommend thinking long and hard before changing. I wish I had read all the forum comments on corosion and problems as I would have just stuck with my old bike. Currently I'm waiting on my 4th warranty issue! Looks like I'll get a new engine now as mine has corroded and the paint has flaked off the engine? Only 6 months old with 3k

Don't get mr wrong I do like it but it's been a mare!
