R1200GSA LC 2015 ESA fault

Hi guys,

My bike has done 42k, and it seems the rear Sachs ESA system isn't happy any more. No leaks, no signs of damage anywhere, compression is fine but on rebound I feel it "knock" as if it's topping out. On "Hard" mode its very noticeable, on "Soft" mode its slightly cushioned, but still there.

Anyone else had this fault, and what was the solution?

I'm absolutely amazed it lasted that long.....

Mine started going 'off' at around 14000 miles although BMW checked it, and wrote me a 'bill of health' report to say it's all working correctly.

I upgraded to Ohlins TTX manual shocks for £2000

You can upgrade to Touratech Tractive shocks for around £3000 which keeps your ESA electronics working.

You can upgrade to Wilbers ESA for around £1500, but that just cannibalises your existing setup (and they don't and can't service the actual dampers, so they'll stay fooked) You'll just get new springs and compression chamber.

You can send them off to Firefox Racing for around £500?, who I think will service your existing dampers with new oil and seals, and make them good again. After this, you might then want to send it off to Wilbers for new springs, compression chamber etc.

You can look on eBay and buy some second hand kit. But you'll have to get them fitted and recalibrated.

You can go back to BMW and buy brand new ESA dampers for about £3000 (but really, I wouldn't do that) as they are rubbish quality. If you're going to spend that money, go to Touratech.

Just a thought but I had a similar symptom on my 2017 but only 11,500 miles. It turned out that the knock was a seized rear-end of the drive shaft, not suspension. If your suspension feels fine apart from the knock then check final drive before shelling out on suspension.
