R1200GSA LC review and Connemara in Autumn.

This will be a longish thread; I have the time if you have.
2013 GS V 2014 GSA.
Traded my 11000 mile GS-LC in August for a GSA Why?
Because I could and having a past which included a 2006 GSA and a near perfect 2010 GSA.
I had real issues with the gearchange on the 13 bike. BMW eventually sorted the issue and we bonded.
I traded for the 14 GSA at Duffy's Dublin. These guys are sound.
I kept my Varios and rear hangers + the big bash plate. Duffy's did it all for me FOC.
Please think of the term SLIGHT when I make the comparisons, they are versions of the same bike after all. the bike.
So my take on the chance over.
• The 13 bike was a horse of a bike, eating up the road in its path. It had just been run in at 11k miles and we were perfectly happy with it.
• The 13 felt and is quicker and the light crank felt more aggressive.
• Comfort and wind protection is about the same, the aftermarket screen on the 13 was good.
• The gearchange is the same, the 14 may be slightly slicker. The gearchange is good, positive changes and never a missed gear but clumsy downchanges poorly synced will result in the most horrible crunch.
• I always thought the clutch action and bite was superb on the LC's.
• Both bikes are super long distance tourers but the 14 is amazingly smooth, it glides along like a Goldwing.
• I like the steering damper, a bit more stability when hopping wheelies. The 14 is a great wheelie bike.
• I think the TC and power modes don't do much and a bit of a marketing novelty, I have read some sportsbike road tests that describe the TC as the new messiah. I don't think the GS TC is as sophisticated as that, or maybe they should test the sportsbike system on Connemara roads.
• I love the big tank these bikes are so comfy they need a long tank range.
• The suspension and height on the 13 was perfect for me. The 14 is tippy toes and I only use the softest setting + 1 helmet.
• Mary loved the 13 co-pilot accommodation and was a bit concerned that the 14 was a bit too tall and heavy for me but she is OK with the 14 now.
• The 13 slaughtered the 14 on track day performance. I could have raced the 13. The 13 just seemed to dig into the corners and could be powered through. I would like to try the 14 on better tyres though. I like the Anakee for knocking around but they were totally overwhelmed on track, that’s how I discovered I am faster at closing the throttle than the TC. The 14 still did a good job on track but I couldn't drive it through and out of corners on those tyres. I could knee down on the 14 all day but it’s a hell of a reach.
Connemara in Autumn next and my conclusion on which bike I like best.

Connemara in great GS country not the namby pamby trendy latte drinking northern Connemara but the southern western way proper Gaeltacht.

Just joking I love the northern end and south Mayo but being born in Shanacavas I am a bit biased.

Interesting comparison. Convinces me to stick with my 13. I'd not want to lose the performance.
Increasingly I'm realising that the 2013 LC looks to have been the evolutionary peak in the GS range.
 
Yep -interesting comparison and agree with a lot of what you say.

Problem as always is comparing a GS with a GSA. GS will always be better on the track ;)

Me I just find my 2014 GSA a much more relaxing ride compared to the 2013 GS and much prefer the smoother engine on the 2014 bike.

.........and not had a gear box/clutch issue on either :thumb
 
I think some riders always schedule trips to Connemara in summer but this time of year is perfect. 8 to 10 degrees today and perfect riding weather, heated grips on Keis vest on the lowest settings. The damp \ wet roads can be ridden at the same pace as when dry, just a bit more effort reading the surface and keeping extra smooth. These bikes are so balanced it makes for easy riding.
There is something Beautiful about the autumn time, there seems to be so much air to breath. It feel sharp and fresh. Its hard to describe but you guys will know what I mean.

I bought my 2014 GSA to do "stuff" on and the bike does this "stuff" very well. its comfy and I can go distances without stopping, i didn't think were possible

If i wanted to wheelie ,knee down and track day .id use my HP4 …the GSA was not designed for these type of antics…fair play to you though …for the track you should turn off the TC and let the bike back in Marquez style…you have it all then..!
 
People drive through Connemara and may not be aware of all the Hi-tech industry there is here.
I popped into this place and had a bunch of bike bits laser cut for my CBX project.

I love track daying the GS bikes. more fun than a HP4 and they are well up to the task. The faster bikes would make more sense if I was looking for lap times.
I did nick Mary's Ninja 300 for a few sessions, this is a cracking bike.

Both bikes are at the top of the game do everything bikes from gravel tracks to knee down track days.
But there is only one winner for me:
 
The magnificent BMW R1200GS Adventure.
A stand out from the crowd motorcycle that goes as good as it looks.

I love it and instantly bonded with the suburb machine.
Well done BMW.
I could live on this bike. I could do 500 miles a day every day of the week and never tire of it.
Sitting in the saddle of this motorcycle is a wonderful place to be.

I've had a few GS's, and this is without doubt the best one, by far. The biggest problem I have with mine is not enough free time to ride it.:comfort:D
 
Not a problem, just an area I may tweak to make the suspension more compliant to me.

Nice write up...how would you tweak your ESA to make it more compliant, as I find mine just a touch harsh under certain road conditions.
 
I am happy enough with the 14 suspension but I am on the softest setting. Maybe a slightly softer set of springs.
The suspension does run in a bit with a bit of miles up.
I am planning my winter exodus now, this should easily push the bike past the magic 10,000 miles running in.
 
I took my 2012 GS on a few track days at Cadwell, was really enjoyable. Mixing it with the quick guys- many great comments from other riders.

Have done 6 trackdays this year on my S1000R which is much more serious ( but still not track bike serious )

My GSA just seems so much bigger than the GS and when it is right over it seems the arc is so much more, you know- it seems as though from upright to full lean there is so much lateral movement. I suppose I should take the GSA on track to see what it can do- no chance of finding this out on the road.What tyre pressures did you run on the Annakees?
