Hi all

Trying to put together a few ideas for a later project, a R1200GSE (expedition)

How about for starters:

Simple brakes, carburetors (any suggestions?), simple electronic ignition(?), big fuel tank, top filling panniers, large, frame mounted bash plate, redesigned brake pedal (routed over the footrest, to protect the brake light switch and increase ground clearance) cable clutch, allen head stainless fixings everywhere. Heavy duty electrical system, possible, small on-board compressor for punctures etc.

Maybe modify the engine to run on poorer quality fuels. lower compression ratio etc

I'd like to keep the weight under 220kg if poss,

Have any of the more travelled members any more ideas?

Shep

Make it dealer-proof, no need for maintenance for the first 100k.

Add some inflatable bouyancy aids for deep river crossings.

You're trying to build an R100 GS with a bigger engine. Airheads fit the bill as always!! ps fit titanium fasteners lower weight and higher tensile strength, stainless fasteners are not suitable for heavy work having a tensile strength almost half that of the original fasteners.

Have a look at the Overlandsolutions web site. There are a couple of pictures of Ernies red & white 1100GS on the site. He's junked all the fuel injection and engine management in favour of carbs. The bike has the larger HPN tank, strengthened subframe etc etc. LB.

carburetors (any suggestions?),

Got to be 40mm Bing (standard on the R100GS). The HPN built Dakar bikes used these so they must be alright. They are so simple that there's very little to go wrong.

Tesco card.

Thats the furthest most expeditions of mine get to :D

Fibber!

You and Clive the wafter are two of the few who properly GS their 12GS's :thumb

Use a non ABS 1100 GS - dealer proof and more reliable than an airhead these days.

A good base for starting with

Hi motomartin,

I agree an 1100 would be fine, but at the time I had a 1200 in the gararge that would run out of warrantee march 06, however, now I have another brand new 1200 in the garage now (1 day old) so I don't think I'll be ripping it apart for another couple of years.

Whats proper use of a 1200?

Is it any different to the proper use of an 1150GS? :eek

I'd shop there!

Daily.

Ditto! Shopping would not be a nasty chore anymore - especially as my girlfriends GSX-R wouldn't make it :D :D:D

Mouse, you bored on a Friday by any chance...?

An R100Gs has to be the ideal 'expedition' bike, tried and tested, relatively light, relatively cheap, parts available worldwide and easy to DIY/bodge. I do like the idea of a built in compressor and have already started planning how to fit one of my small nail gun units onto the R100.
