I couldn't find where this thread should belong (probably not on a GS site at all) but here it is - feel free to move it.........

I took a test ride on a R1200R last week :drool

I've been looking to downgrade cc and weight from my CBF1000 but the salesman persuaded me I'd be disappointed in the F650GS and the temptation of riding a 1200 was too much.

At 5'2" with a 29" inside leg, finding the right bike has always been a challenge. The R1200R had a factory lowered frame and a low seat. The seating position was comfortable but the left foot peg always seemed to be in the way when I came to a halt.
In congested traffic, I expected the bike to feel heavy but in fact, it was incredibly easy to filter and the engine felt smooth rather than lumpy.
On an open dual carriageway, three figures were reached quickly but the sports fairing was inadequate. It also didn't offer any protection from the icy rain and sleet which came my way later in the ride. :comfort

Taking a twisty B road towards Grassington, I hardly noticed the rough road surface, debris and the rain soaked tarmac. The bike felt firmly planted and I loved the fact I could rely on engine braking into corners - something lacking on the CBF.

My main gripe is the BMW indicators, especially the cancel button. Why didn't they put it on the left / free hand side? Due to my small hands, I found I had to physically remove my hand from the throttle to use it and got so fed up, I used only hand signals.

After warming up by an open fire and a hearty lunch in Kettlewell, I returned to Allan Jeffries via a slightly different route. The rain had stopped and once again, the bike performed well. Nothing really exciting to report about it but a steady and reliable ride.

Unfortunately, it was too late to take the F650GS out for a ride so that will have to be rearranged.

I enjoyed riding the R1200R, it was surprisingly easy to handle both on and off the bike. Would I buy one? Absolutely! :thumb2
But would I pay £9.5k+ on one? Probably not.
I paid £5.5k for my 2 yr old CBF and there's a part of me that thinks with an extra £4k, I could own a second (or 4th) bike! :D

I' ve had one and are a better road bike than the GS. Look at second hand ones, they are great value, compared with the GS, though a bit more difficult to find.

Agree that the R1200R is a cracking bike. if you are not too bothered about having the latest DOHC engine there are a few around that are closer to your budget. Also the earlier R1150R is still a cracking bike.

I am quite taken by the R1200R Classic; black with white stripe. If this had been around when I bought my last bike (GS) it would have been a tough choice as it ticks pretty much everything I want in bike without the height of a GS. ESA, ABS, panniers, etc.

Only thing the R really needs is decent screen (instead of the silly BMW item) to complete the picture as a distance bike; Wunderlich do some colour matched top fairings but at pretty price.

BMW do a 'High Screen' for the R, though its not very high, its in keeping with the style, it was enough for me. Agree with your comments re the classic, apart from the tubed wire wheels it looks good:thumb

You will get used to the indicators, I hated them at first, but dont mind them now :thumb2

thanks for the comments
- problem with finding a s/h bike is I need a lowered version - unsure if I could touch the floor without the lowered frame

A friend has the R850R which is standard but has a very low seat height. Anyone know whether the 1150 substantially differed to the 850?

I agree with you about the indicators. I've had mine for nearly 6 months now. It took a few months for it to sink in but at stressfull moments (dark slippy wet roundabout in the evening rush hour with cars coming at me from all sides), it has been known to go to rats. :blast

The oil cooler looks very exposed right down low behind the front wheel .......

They are basically the same bike apart from the obvious cc difference.

I've got a lovely black 1150R which I love riding in the summer months, although it's a bit chilly for riding it just now.

I had my RT serviced at Cotswold BMW last week, & had a 1200R as a loan bike.

I thought it was lovely, & I know that a significant of those in the trade reckon a lot of GS customers would be better of with an R, but it's the GS that leaves the showrooms in droves.

For proof of that... see how few dealers as actually stock and/or sell the GS boots... even tho it's actually a pretty good off-road boot and at a good price... pretty telling how many GS riders care about going off-road :blast

Im taking a 1200R out for a test ride saturday, shall be interesting to see what I think. I've ridden a 1200gs serveral times but am interested in the 1200R as it would be nice to have a naked bike for a change!

long ago, i had an 1150R loaner while my 1150GS was being serviced. vies with an early XJ900 as the most boring bike i have ever ridden. i would rather take the bus.

slightly more recently, i was given a 1200R as a loaner. completely different animal, thought it was great. latest model is supposedly even better.

I've had my R for 3 years now and its fabulous. Up for sale too as I have grown out of it. Gone for the gsa.
I got a calsci touring screen for it and it is excellent. can ride with open face and sunny's no problem.
anyone interested just pm me.

Stick it in the FS&W section :thumb

Or maybe they simply choose to buy their clothing elsewhere? (Or already have a perfectly serviceable pair of boots)
