Hi folks, My bike is a 2005 R1200RT. Any suggestions of how to prepare insitu and what paint to use (primer and black paint) for refurbishing the front engine cover which is badly corroded around the central area, black paint is flaking off all helped by the now removed sponge sound proofing behind the plastic cover. Many thanks for any ideas.

Also, Thinking of changing the air filter to a K&N type on my 2005 BMW R1200RT, my question is….are they any advantages using a K&N and does any other bike part require adjustment.

Forget the K&N, total utter waste of money, just my opinion like... on the other hand, get a remap and live happily ever after

PS, welcome to the show

I have a 2005 one as well

Have it since 2007. Don't now if the front cover is corroded or not, because I have never looked.
Bike is for riding, not pulling bits of navel fluff out of it.
Re: air cleaner. Whay bother changing it? It works as it is.
And anyway, a paper filter has better filtration properties.
OK, so maybe there is 0.000005 hp in it. So what! The bike already has more power than I need and has been known to cover 500 miles in 6 hours
(including 3 stops for food and fuel.)

Not a way to protect your investment and resale value, I also wonder if the corrosion (See my link/pics) can get so bad under the alternator belt cover that it could rot through the timing chest cover and cause a oil leak.
The pics of mine were when the bike was only 2 years old and look bad enough

Thanks for your input, appears to be common problem on BMs. The fluff sorry the corrosion is deep enough to be of concern that it could eat through the engine cover, oil leak over the back wheel, OMG. That damm sponge is the culprit which holds water. Thats now in the bin. To avoid replacement i will refurb insitu, wire brush then paint up hopefully to delay renewal of cover for a few years.
Will have a re-think about the K&N air filter, any ideas who does remapping in East Yorkshire?
