Has anyone taken one of these apart yet ?

I am in mid flow ... well about 80% there (pre load was not working) - fault code saying short circuit (polite way to say motor unable to do it's stuff).
Motor is working fine ... exactly how do they translate circular motion into "vertical" displacement ?
Always nice to know how these things work before going where I'm going (it was NOT going to work, and most people would advise replace with aftermarket xxx) .. so nout to loose !! New one from BMW does not come into equation I suspect.
It's a White power shock (std) , so I'm assuming rebuildable by someone.

You have checked for a cable fault between the ECU and the shocker I suppose Sir, would be a shame to take it all to bits if its not in the shocker :blast

Motor plugged in - doing it's stuff fine. I can't turn the "hex input shaft " much - easily - so don't thing a plastic drive is going to be fit for job. Real fault is probably a complete lack of use in 60,000 miles !! by original owner

I wanted to remove spring anyway to replace / repaint it - white paint just falling off it - probably normalish ??

Update (seeing as nobody was able to fill in the blanks) for now - photies to follow IF anyone is interested.
Have managed to get the preload mechanism to pieces , not a 5 minute job , but doable - had to make up two peg spanners (Typical ... they of course had to be different pitches !!).
I reckon it IS fixable - no more complex really than a brake slave cylinder , apart from the unusual (?) set up of having a pressurised chamber built into the assembly , I presume to make doubley sure all the oil stays where it shoud be given the orientation of things relative to ? gravity !!

If anyone knows what the oil is (I shall assume a good hydraulic oil) , how much of it there is , and what gas is used (and how they get it in there ? ... I am assuming a simple chemical reaction) ... pls let me know - otherwise it wil get modified to take a shock type schroder valve arrangement.

hmm .... very interesting ... but complex........... :beerjug:
