R1200's catching fire

Gawd, one more addition to the growing List of Concerns. These are the ones that currently do it for me.

10 - Static Cling
9 - Dani Pedrosa. Why don't people seem to get his jokes?
8 - The fear that the ball of elastics in the first floor office will oneday roll down the stairs and crush a loved one.
7 - Madonna and Guy
6 - The unrecognised car parked overnight in front of the neighbours house across the road
5 - Mounting evidence of increased nose and ear hair
4 - Dnieper or Ural. Which one pulls the birds?
3 - Specsavers' Spectacle Wearer of the Year awards. Who's made it to the next round?
2 - Beer. God's way of saying be loves us and wants us to be happy but, just how happy does he want us to be?
1 - Spontaneous human combustion. Are we not safe at any speed?

To quote further from the article, "...On being joined by a supervisor I discovered this is the latest of half a dozen such incidents that he was aware of, all involving our BMW R1200RTs. In previous cases the fault has been traced to oil starvation, despite the bikes containing sufficient oil in their sumps."

No mention of 1200GSs.

I'm sure, with the number of Tossers on this site, if it was an R1200 engine prob we'd heard of it.

From my experience most engine fires are caused by electrics, usually close enough to fuel lines to send the whole vehicle up. Given the amount of extra wiring that goes on a police bike it's hardly surprising some of them are burnin' up. In fact a Hants. Pol. Honda Pan 1100 caught light at the Farnborough Air Show this year next to a £25m Euro Fighter! Never seen a fire extinguisher move so quick!!
An engine seizure will just grind everything to a halt with a burnt oil smell.
 
Police bikes are often left to idle for amazingly long periods of time. The heat build-up, helped by enveloping bodywork to hold it in, must be substantial. As the boxer motor is designed to shed heat by moving air over the cylinder fins and the oil radiator this might seem a bit of a problem when they're left at standstill for extended periods. I understand overheating in this manner was sometimes an issue with 1100/1150RTs.

I have heard of a 1200GS catching fire,a mate of the owners was talking to me about my GS at the Ponderosa one Sunday back in 2005 but I have no idea why it had caught fire.But I dont think its a problem like say the FPC or ring antenna :nenau
 
this is worrying...

those huge flames from the hub - how did anyone get so close to photograph (strange that the reaction is to get the camera rather than sort it out - perhaps driven by the opportunity to moan).

Good bit of advice - if your bike's on fire, get off, put it out, I blame it on third party and FIRE insurance policies, in the old days....

and another thing, these sidestands are sh%t, if you don't put them down, the bike falls over when you get off!

Nah, it's a genuine question. You can tell by the question mark at the end and everyfink.

I'm considering buying one, but heard about this potential 'fault' so thought I'd see if it was a known issue. It made sense to come to a site that considers itself something of an authority on BMW's.

Evidently not.;)

So I guess the list of things that regularly goes wrong (why do I keep buying BMW's:confused:) doesn't include fires?

Brill, I've burned one BMW already, I don't want to make a habit of it.
 
You`ve been unlucky with a fire but it really isn`t an issue as far as I`m aware and it`s certainley not a known problem.
 
My 2006 R1200RT caught fire !:spitfire

Turned out the ZFE had thrown a wobbler and put full juice to the wiring harness causing it to burn out. I managed to disconnect the battery before the Fire Brigade turned up. The wires had started to melt the petrol tank.

Not a nice feeling being on the road and finding the electrics had gone AWOL and smoke coming out beneath the fairing.

My fire certainly wasn't a known problem, or even a bike fault - it wasn't the one in the opening post by the way and it dates from about 10 years ago.;)

Thanks though, my mind is set at ease that R1200s catching fire isn't something that's likely to happen regularly.
