I know this is probably classed as an ‘oil thread’ and I should be ashamed of myself for posting it but, I’ve just changed the final drive oil on my new to me 2021 R1250GS and it came out black at 6016miles. I talked myself into spending £34 on half a litre of the BMW G3 70w-80 Hypoid stuff from the dealer, even though I’ve got a full bottle of Castrol Syntrax 75w-90 from my 1200 on the shelf. Though it does smell a bit different.
Anyway, nearly 200ml came out but I stuck to putting back 180ml, this is the reassurance I’m after. Is this still the right amount? everyone says so including the girl who knows everything on the service desk at the dealer.

I changed mine at 2000 miles and it came out a similar state as yours.

I didnt need to change it but I checked the drive splines, in doing so, i spilled FD oil so decided to drain it, because it looked like yours i decided to change it.

I am hopeful that it's like this because of bedding in but not convinced. I frequently serviced my old Hexhead so put in 180ml of Castrol SAF-XO.

It seems fine, Im off to the Picos end of June and will drain it on my return as the bike will be due a service by then so intruiged to see the state of the oil when it comes out.

My experience from my old bike there wasn't much change in the look of the FD oil from one 6000 mile service to the other.

I had read somewhere in the distant past that the additional capacity at first drain down could be due to the 180ml of fluid being mixed with the assembly grease, which also accounts for the very dark colour.
Don’t know how true that is but it appeared to sound plausible.

I lubed splines on my bike when it had only 5000 miles and used the opportunity to replace final drive fluid. It came out completely clean (it was its first change). 2021 R1250GS

Just to be different I will just say no to 180ml :augie
Seriously, 180 is the real number.
I use a large syringe from the chemists to get it about right.
