Now then....I realise that this will set off banshee style wailing across the country as its the old favourite topic of oil !

But my 2 questions are simple and only require the briefest of responses (if you'd be so kind).....I don't need an understanding of the P&L of operating a Motorrad dealership in the Uk....

1. Who makes BMW Advantec Oil for them ?
2. What are people putting in their 1250's instead of BMW Advantec Oil (maybe same as answer 1...)

Manual says:
4litres of SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA2 (no additives)

...and let the wailing commence...

Shell make it.

I used Castrol Power 1 Racing 5w40 in my 1200, I assume it would meet the same specs for the 1250 but haven't looked into it. This oil was the recommended oil until BMW switched to Sheel

DESCRIPTION

BMW Motorrad’s two new engine oils, ADVANTEC ULTIMATE (this product) and ADVANTEC PRO, are jointly developed and exclusively formulated by Shell lubricants and BMW to demanding and exact specifications for top performance and long service life for BMW Motorrad high-performance engines.

Please Note: ADVANTEC Oils are sold in LITER bottles. 1 Liter = 1.05669 Quarts

Engine oil quality depends largely on its main components: the base oils. They make up approximately 75-90% of engine oil. Original BMW Engine Oils are based on the new patented PurePlus Technology™, which refines base oils from natural gas instead of crude oil. The result is crystal clear base oils that contain virtually none of the impurities found in crude oils. PurePlus Technology™ marks a breakthrough in how engine oils are formulated to provide enhanced viscosity, reduced friction and lower volatility.

Since 2012, BMW Motorrad has re-aligned its published recommendations globally to only two engine oil viscosities for all engine types:
• ADVANTEC ULTIMATE, SAE 5W-40 (API SN/JASO MA2) — recommended for the following 2005 & later models: K1200 RS/S/GT, K1300 S/GT, G450X, HP2 Sport, K1600 GT/GTL, S1000 RR/R/HP4, and all LIQUID-COOLED R1200 Models.
• ADVANTEC PRO, SAE 15W-50 (API SJ/JASO MA2) — recommended for all other models.*

* For owners of what BMW calls “Legacy Motorcycles” (those built prior to 1995) who prefer to continue using a mineral oil based product, BMW continues to offer two viscosities that protect earlier engine designs in most temperature ranges: SAE 10W40 (API SG/JASO MA2) and SAE 20W50 (API SG/JASO MA2).

There are some good (cheaper) alternatives from Motul and Petronas with the correct specifications.

Use what the manual advises or what your BMW dealer advises - simples :) It baffles me why people worry about the cost of 4 litres of oil every 6,000 miles.

You await 6,000 miles ?

Do you not think that the dealer recommends what they sell, not necessarily what the manual specifies.

Yep only replace oil every 6,000 miles at the service intervals, more frequently is unnecessary - also my dealer changes my oil these days, I can’t be arsed with the grubbing about on a garage floor and I don’t have a suitable drain down which to pour the old oil.

Re suitable drain.
There will be one outside your house in the road, the one where the rain water goes. Just pour it down there.
Be good to the environment and make sure you put your old oil container in the recycle waste.

Ok thanks for the tip, I might try changing the oil myself next time, I might even save a few shillings.

Please tell me you're joking about using the drain

Just be careful that you don’t let the oil drain plug down the drain. JJH

1). Ive read online that its actually made by Shell.

2) Just had my bike serviced at BMW with their Advantec oil. Cost approx £75 for the 5L of oil with filter change. In the UK, there's a dealer called Sportsbikeshop. They have just started stocking Millers Oils. An oil company thats from my hometown of Brighouse in Yorkshire. Its been operating for decades in this field, and i know it well.

SBS charge £8.95 for a litre bottle, £29.95 for 4L. The oil is fully synthetic as per the BMW one and complies with the API SL/ Jaso MA2 properties. I shall be supplying my dealer with this oil at its next service. https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/2613837

I heard Miller makes good stuff, I prefer Penrite 10w-50 (10!!! I know that is going to send shock waves through this forum)
