R1250GSA Steering Damper Failure... Options?

I just looked at my 2019 1250GSA damper and it has a circlip in either end of the cylinder body, suggesting it can be rebuilt. The seal looks like a standard hydraulic rod lip seal, assuming its a standard size (presumably metric) they should be available over the counter somewhere. The oil is probably 5W or 10W shock oil.

Perhaps Denz0 could rebuild it for you, no doubt over time other owners will have the same problem?
Thanks for that, much appreciated 👍 I’ve now reached out to Denz0 to see what he might be able to do.

Sadly I just reinspected with a small mirror, and found a tiny pit on the back of the shaft. So options 1 & 2 could be a no go ☹️

If they are and I end up replacing the unit. I might pull the original apart and throw up some pics with measurements of seals etc in case that might benefit someone else 🫤

Perhaps the rod could be rechromed and ground by somebody such as ABE in London?

It’s also a matter of cost versus a new unit.

I’d wager it’s stone chip damage.

Possible but it’s on the back facing the engine… so it might have been a crafty rebound trick shot off the casing?

Anyway… I’ve just had a great chat with Denz0, really nice knowledgeable guy👍 He doesn’t rebuild the oem units anymore. Lots of good reasons why not, ultimately if they’ve failed once they’re prone to failing again. However, after testing a few alternatives he does keep stock of a GS suitable YSS racing spec adjustable unit. Complete with 2yr warranty and they’re fully rebuildable (if needed) with kits readily available. These are also cheaper than other dampers and even makes looking at used units pointless.

I’ll definitely be ordering one 👌
