Hi guys, if you may remember my topbox detached itself when I hit a pothole a few weeks ago, BMW were kind enough to replace it (but not my camera) but the new box lid does not close as well as the previous box did, not re-assuring click and sticks terribly when opening. Anyhow, to the point, while my bike was in having the light switch unit replaced yesterday I asked about the topbox and was told "BMW are no longer providing the topbox, all distribution has been frozen as a result of the many incedences of the topbox falling off".

My BMW shop will try and replace the topbox again when the new v2.0 is available.

Sorry to read of your woes. So far my box remains in place, but I would be very interested to know how your locking mechanism failed. Did the hooks or the latches fracture or did the latching mechanism unfasten due to the inertia when you went over the pothole?

Terry

Hi Terry, yup, the jolt of hitting a pothole at 120km/h seemed to cause the locking bracket thingy to pop out. Mine was the 3rd such case I personally know of and witnessed first hand.

Kappa/givi now do a kit to fit the 1200 without the need to drill out the tail section above the rear light. looks very robust you can fit the 48 litre box with high level brake light

Thanks CM, I do not have the off road situation, but having limited experience in SA can see how it could be. Our local mob say they have no recall in europe. As the two locking mechanisms are linked does tank tape hold the things in short term? It seems BM like over centre cam locks these days.
