R1300 GS BMW 5/40 Oil

Bought four 1 litre bottles on Monday from local dealer no problem. Went in today to get a fifth litre bottle to be told they are no longer selling BMW oil direct to customers in 1 litre bottles. Looking at many dealers and oil shown as out of stock. Seem to be protecting their stocks.

The BMW Oil Refinery must be suffering from a lack of supply due to the BMW oil tankers having to navigate around the Strait of Hormuz.
It's a big problem. I wonder how the Yamaha, Triumph and Honda tankers are getting on.

The only thing special about BMW Advantec is the price.

It's just Shell Advance with a 5W modifier. Before that, BMW used Castrol Power 1. But they got a better deal off Shell to brand theirs.

Absolutely any oil that SAE 5w40 API SL JASO MA2 standard will be MORE than good enough for even the new R1300.

It would be hard to find an oil manufactured in the last ten years that doesn't. The BMW oil standard is actually quite low. As API-SN has been around for YEARS now and is better. That's what I use..

The only stipulation with oil is that it can't be based with Molybdenum Disulfide (Think Liquid Moly). As this can damage DLC coatings.

The ‘ check oil level ‘ warning came on yesterday. I contacted two of my most local dealers today and was told the same as TS, no BMW oil available, other than workshop use drums.

My oil level is just above the 1/2 way mark on the sight glass.

I hope by adding a small amount that it will prevent the warning coming on again.

The second dealership advised Halfords and getting an equivalent Specification 5-40, so a 1 litre bottle of Castrol Power 1 Ultimate for £9.66 was purchased.

Bike goes in for its second service in 6 weeks, hope oil situation is resolved by then.

Does the oil level sit at that height when hot and cold ? Assuming it's on the center stand.

You shouldn't be getting any kind of check light if it's above minimum.

Oil level should be checked with the bike straight and level. With the oil at running temperature (plus 80c is sufficient).

After waiting a couple of minutes for it to settle after shutting off the engine.

It'll be resolved as soon as you top it up.

I had a similar issue with my 2025 R1300GS. The "check oil" warning came on, even though there appeared to be plenty of oil when checking in the sight glass (using the procedure outlined in the book).

My dealer diagnosed a faulty oil level sensor which was replaced under warranty.

Book it in to get the oil sensor checked. I wouldn't add oil to that level, looks fine.

Your oil level is perfect. If you have a dash light, the likely culprit is a faulty sensor.

Similar issue with mine. Faulty sensor replaced under warranty.
